You know... I never thought of this before, but I was reading some comments on a 2DS article on Kotaku, and one of them suggested that a possible reason Nintendo didn't give it hinges or stereo sound is that it would cut into the sales of the 3DS. It makes perfect sense, really. If it was just as good as the 3ds but in 2D, probably a lot of people would buy it instead of the 3DS. Plus I think it would be a bit more expensive.
