my sensor bar is plugged into my wii u but the wiimotes still work on my wii... how is that possible? (and no i'm not complaining)

The sensor bar doesn't really do any sensing, it's just a shell with two infrared sources.
The Wii mote itself does all the work.

You can even use two candles for a sensor bar. I've tried it before and it works.
