I share a small apartment with my fiance and she likes to hog our 42 inch HDTV in our living room which I use for gaming! She isn't a gamer at all.

Wii U is really useful for Off TV Play as I can contine playing but if I want to play my PS3, 360 or retro consoles I can't so that leads me to consider a smaller HDTV for our bedroom! Yes it was my idea ;)

I want something smaller than 42 inch and a budget of £350. With picture quality, build quality and features taken into account what would be best? Is 28-32 inch good for gaming?

I have a Sony Bravia 26" that is mounted in my office for my game consoles.  Nothing on the living room TV, the wife isn't fond of gaming.

Though she likes snowboard kids and Mario Kart Wii.

hmm that one looks nice. My 42 inch is a Sony Bravia and I read somewhere most brands all use LG's displays!

Its not true that most brands use LG displays. For example both Samsung and Sony have their own panel manufacturing facilities. The cheap brands use other cheap panels probably from China. In my opinion the best brands are Sony and Panasonic with Samsung close behind. Brands like LG and Toshiba are OK. I would suggest you get at least a 32" TV. Also even though people say that to take advantage of 1080p you need a 40" or bigger even on a 32" it makes a difference in my opinion. I have a 32" Sony Bravia Full HD 1080p TV for my gaming and its great.

I have switched back and forth between 720p and 1080p and can't see any difference apart from less overscan.

I think 32 inch would be best then. If I am sitting closer to the screen my bigger TV won't "seem" much larger I suppose.

1080p does make a difference even at 32" I don't rate Sony TV's they are always clunky and old fashioned looking ok in comparison Panasonic are good but you pay a lot for the name.

I have an LG 42" full hd lcd in my room, a Panasonic 42" plasma down stairs and a JVC 42" lcd in my upstairs lounge room. I prefer the jvc to be honest.

I have a Series 8 42" LED LCD TV from Samsung. It has treated me very well. I always buy from Samsung for TV's or Monitors.

I disagree. Sony TV's are are very stylish and good looking as are Panasonic TV's. Samsung on the other hand whilst good value for money and good quality are clunky and old fashioned looking.

i do apologise in advance but i can't agree with this you just need to look at the side profile of a bravia set of the same price bracket as the samsung or lg's to tell that they are square porky tv's.

At the end of the day its a matter of opinion and personal taste. I guess ours differs.

Been looking at some other models but don't really know what to look for specs wise. What contrast ratio is ideal?

Still not 100% sure. What should I pick out of 50hz, 60hz and 100hz TV's? 720p HD ready or full 1080p?

You definitely want 1080p, stick with either lcd or led for gaming.
