It seems that nowadays top end GPUs really have the processing power to do the tasks required by a CPU including run an operating system. Do you feel with the Wii U design having more CPU tasks dedicated to GPU - in 5, 7, 10+ years time when the 9th Gen kicks off that CPUs will be outdated and GPUs will be the only thing needed?

Just a thought!

I SAID NOT APRIL FOOLS. I'm being serious

EDIT: Sorry for shouting.

I'm asking does anyone thing CPUs in consoles are outdated and we don't need them anymore what with the architecture of a gPU capable of doing many many many many more tasks than a CPU

No. You still need a CPU for certain tasks. You can't use the GPU for everything.

advanced branch prediction is the major obstacle facing this scenario.

Since gpu's tend to be so heavily thteaded and have so much simd and paralell tasks, missing a branch prediction would be absolitely devastating, and grind that part of the system to a halt until the crashed pipeline is cleared out.

The higher the clock and more multithreading going on, the more devastating it will be.

Of course, its being worked on, and the results are looking promising.

I heard (trying desperately to find the article). That the military wants to fund research into a GPU only supercomputer, where all it was made up with is a custom architecture and OS using GPUs only

Projects like that would be in a DARPA press release if they were released at all.

Oooohhh, the gpu super computers.

Yeah, no, that wont work for videogames because games require logic, that need to handle unpredictable situations, conditionals, rather than just grinding away at large data atructures.

Awwwww I love the idea of GPU only machines in the future

consoles use amd... and technologies are split between amd and nvidia.. CPU is the one who covers up these techs...  Physics run through the cpu, because amd cannot do it, as it is NVIDIA property... thats how the market works... lol

Personally I would prefer a wii U with nvidia gpu... like gtx550 or 560... it could do hardware phscs in the GPU and 3d tv... but nvidia is 2 monitors... tv and 1 gamepad...  AMD is 6 monitors split.

I'm sure it will be possible at some point, tech is moving crazy fast, especially in this last decade, just imagine in 50 years time O_O

Oh yeah, definately.

But heres the rub... Wonce the graphics processing unit becomes the central processing unit well....

It becomes the Central Processing Unit XD.
