Why do they need it?
Pretty much this.
A lot of their stuff is digital now and digital animation requires just as much animation as traditional.
I've seen one of their new Mickey Mouse animations (the one in France) and it's pretty great.
Doesn't mean that laying off their animators is excusable. I have problems with that, but the quality shouldn't change just because it's digital. It'll change if the digital animators themselves have no say in their creations, they are supposed to be creative.

>>BREAKING NEWS<<
Disney, the kid friendly multi-billionaire mega corporation, is now on a killing spree. They have been "axing" many hard working employees and effectively killing potential money makers. Disney's motivation is unclear but some crime analysts seem to think that they are "Cutting out the fat" in the form of the studios heads.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start by making their employees commit suicide.

But they would have to do it with a water gun because a real gun is not PG.

Well, I've finally found my Starfox, and I love it.

I enjoy Disney's hand drawn films infinitely more than any of their digital films. I love the art style far more, so this is pretty sad.

I was really hoping they would make another traditionally animated film in the near future.
Such an let-down.
