The first of next month my grandson will be coming down to live with me and thusly my thought on purchasing the Wii U. I almost did so today but hesitated because I could not see how I could use that controller to play my game's. I mostly play sports with my Wii, I play tennis, baseball, bowling, archery and table tennis. The motion sensor and nunchuck do a great job and make you feel almost like you are actually participating but I cannot see how that game pad can do that. It seems that game--pad is getting ever body back to the couch potato.
The only two people that have any knowledge about the system returned theirs to the store and did not seem to want to talk about it too much. They wanted to talk about the PlayStation four. The Wii that I now have has given me so much enjoyment over the past six months, I really want to know what I am missing here.

I don't play what most people would call normal game's on the Wii, it's all about movement and getting off the couch – I would hate to have to rely completely on the kinect. So if someone would be so kind as to tell me if controllers is the only way the U is now and there is no get off the couch to it or not.
Thank you so much

The gamepad is I guess more of a couch controller  but wii controllers/temotes are also supported for games so you have the best of both worlds so to speak. The wii u is also wii compatible so you get to play all your old wii games too but this time with better quality video output through hdmi. Some wii u games won't support wii remote though as they depend on the touch screen.

Hi! Most games that are comming out still have support for the original WiiMotes and other Wii contollers/accesories. In the box you get an iR bar like the original Wii.

Also the Wii U can boot into what most people call vWii Mode (Virtual Wii Mode) so you can still play all your old Wii games. There's even a data transfer utility to put all your save games and WiiWare on the new console.

In the update thats coming out you'll be about to boot right into vWii mode by holding the B button the the gamepad.

As of right now the only game that still extensively uses the WiiMote in Wii U mode is Nintendoland. And boy it's fun!

Hopefully I covered some questions :)

Your grandson would love it, but at the moment there aren't many good sports titles like what you described for it, so the backwards compatibility with older wii games will be good for you until the sports games come out.

It also acts as a TV controller.

Yeah the Wii U's gamepad isn't really great for sports titles in the same way the Wii remote and nunchuk were on the original Wii. It is still a great controller, but don't expect to be playing the same kind of games you did on Wii. The gamepad is great for multiplayer (both players have a full screen to themselves), and off-tv play is really good when you want to play in a different room or when someone else needs to use the TV, but so far we haven't really seen the unique gameplay abilities of the gamepad besides a couple of games like Nintendo Land and ZombiU.

I'm sure your grandson would love playing Mario Bros. and Nintendo Land, but unfortunately the Wii U doesn't offer the sort of "getting off the couch" games you are looking for apart from a couple of poorly reviewed (I haven't played them myself so I couldn't tell you if they are good or not) sports titles, and some fitness titles.

it's a trap!  beware the trolls

What grandpa a. knows how to find a site like this and make an account and b. has friends who don't like the Wii U and want to talk about Playstation 4?  Too suspicious for me to give a serious response.

The wii u is fully compatable with all Nintendo wii controllers.

The game Nintendo land has several game modes that are wii remote and nunchuck, imcluding one that will have you off the couch and swimging the remote like a sword.

As of right now, the wii u is in a serious droubt, and the majority of games being made are made bu third parties, who never learned how to utilize motion controls, so there arent many motion controlled games like you want for the wii u at the moment.

I wish to apologize to everyone here for forgetting to tick the subscribe button, so I had no idea that anyone had replied to my post. Please accept my most humble apologie.

I had envisioned having it when my grandson got down here as a surprise but after finding out some of the things about this unit, I believe it is best to wait until he is here and let him tell me if he wants it or not.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time and trouble to answer my post and give me the information that I needed.

I must say this post has given me quite a laugh, although I am not used to anyone questioning my ethics
or character – it is still funny. Perhaps it is because you are uneducated as to my situation!

I live in a small town that consists of a very tiny post office, a combination fiiling station and grocery store and a small repair shop that fixes everything from an automobile to the toaster. It boasts 225 feet of sidewalk on one side of the highway, a crossroads – one caution light and a heck of the mosquito population. While it will not give New York City or Washington DC any great competition, it gets the job done but no gaming mosquitoes.

The nearest town of any size is 39 miles away, which in my younger days was a hop skip and jump but today is a major undertaking. It has a senior center and that is where I became acquainted with the Wii, later the Xbox and even later the PlayStation three. The most popular program there is "country line dance", no rap or hip-hop here.

As far as the friends, they were not friends – just two people I met at the store where I was buying some batteries and trying to get some information while I was there. I only talked to them for two or possibly 3 min, so I would not exactly call them a friend.

Me and my grandson both agree on one thing, if we had to have one console – it would be the Wii. So you will have to look for somewhere else to find the troll.

Well the Wii U could be a natural progression of that, and for you and your grandson, Nintendoland is the number one game to get, it's really fun and is the Wii Sports of the Wii U.
