Shortly after introducing Brave heroine Merida to the Disney Princess fold, fans and critics decried a controversial new look for the character that circulated online. A Change.org petition addressed to Disney CEO Bob Iger garnered over 200K signatures. Even director Brenda Chapman, who was replaced by Disney on Brave but won an Academy Award for her contributions to the girl empowerment pic, piled on with her own public denouncement calling the redesign as “a blatantly sexist marketing move based on money.”

It’s not the first time the Disney Princess brand has come under fire in recent years. Last fall’s introduction of Princess Sofia to Disney TV viewers would have marked the first

Hispanic Disney Princess in the studio’s history. “She is Latina,” exec producer Jaime Mitchell even confirmed on the record before Disney officials backpedaled. Just last Tuesday the studio similarly backtracked from attempts to trademark the “Dia de los Muertos” Mexican holiday for an upcoming film following another media firestorm. “It has since been determined that the title of the film will change, and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing,” the studio said in an official statement.

Update: Disney is officially staying mum on the controversy that erupted this week over the makeover it gave Pixar‘s Brave heroine Merida to induct her into the Disney Princess fold. But contrary to media reports, a studio source says Disney never placed the slimmed down, sexed up Princess Merida design circulating online on its websites in the first place. Their actual Merida redesign is much tamer than the one making the rounds on blogs they say, and was created only for artwork promoting the character’s Disney “coronation.” They’ll stick to their guns on their new Disneyfied Merida design, which will appear on a limited run of products such as backpacks and sleepwear this summer and fall as

Eh... I can understand where people are coming from, but at the same time the redesign isn't that much "sexier". Or maybe I've been looking at too many Japanese products and can't recognize unreasonable proportions anymore lol.

“a blatantly sexist marketing move based on money.”

I laughed at that line. It's so blunt, and it seems like this.

"So if Zero Suit Samus is fanbait for guys, where is the fanbait for girls? Why isn’t Captain Falcon wearing a thong or sporting a chest twice the size of his last model? Why doesn’t Mario have an absurd crotch buldge holding in his 10 inch slice of manhood? Why doesn’t Yoshi look like a Fist of the North Starcharacter.

That, my friends, is why the design is sexist."~Angelo M. D'Argenio-4/17/2014

"Yes, because owning only 1 game in this series makes you qualified to have an opinion on it"~PyroKinesis-5/7/2014

"He is a game dev, critic, games media writer, and candidate for a phd by the way. So, LMFAO."~3Dude 9/4/2014

Radical feminists really are some of the most easily offended, moronic people on the planet. I'm all for equal rights, but how the hell is it equal to try and solve the issues of only one gender? Men have problems too, like getting harsher sentences than women for the EXACT SAME CRIMES. Not to mention the discrimination against men in the court systems....

.... And they're upset with a makeover that's practically unchanged from the original? Really the only change I can see is a slightly fancier dress. I applaud you, Feminazis. No group of people other than you make me lose more hope in the human race than you do.

Good work feminists, you've done the world good by making a cartoon character not look slightly more attractive...ish? What's next? Making the Ms. Buttersworth Syrup lady have a larger waist? Burning Ken dolls? Getting Barbie's bra size down to an A cup? Don't worry, I'm sure issues such as domestic abuse and modern slavery can wait. You have to stick to the your priorities, and this was obviously the one that should be on the top of the list. This was obviously a huge blow against the females worldwide!!!
