With this just being an example, 2GB is doable for such high end games, with 8gb being the reccomended for super high def.
But I don't think the xbox. One or the PS4's cpu and gpu can ceven compare to a super high end system, maybe the midrange. All it really means is that the ram won't be a bottleneck. It could be handy though, as you can load larger maps and not worry about loading screens as much once the game starts, but it depends on the developers.
Personally I'm waiting to see how.the games work on retail systems. It moght just not be worth it, especially with all of the unknowns such as how used games arer handeled.

Going a little off topic but i still don't see how 8GB of RAM is really going to make a major difference in the PS4 tech even though the tech demos were running on 3-4GB. People seem to be inclined to believe that more RAM means better Graphics, more RAM might help increase performance, frame rate, objects on screen and animation but it shouldn't make to much of a difference on screen. Im no tech expert and I can see the extra RAM helping improve the overall graphics, but i doubt it will be as much as people will think it will be.
If im wrong please correct me on this.
Exactly.

In the PC world 8gb is currently the logical maximum, with anything more being overkill.

That's basically the point. They won't have access to all 8GB, and I seriously doubt they'll have access to 4GB, but we don't know for sure yet. The GPU and CPU wouldn't allow "super high def" anyway, not equivelent to what is possible on the PC side. The amount of memory is overkill from a cost to manufacture perspective, but I'm sure developers are happy for it.
RAM in pc's needs to be higher than on consoles because it runs more programs in the background. This doesn't go for X1 because of 3 OS' lol. But no way the next-gen games will use more than 6GB. 4 is a lot already. (I think Wii U should have had 4, 1 being for OS. 1GB for games is pretty low)
They'll free up more for games in the future, perhaps with the summer update, they are still ironing out the OS, but 1-1.5GB is actually plenty when you are able to stream from a disc to pull in assets. Most games during actual gameplay don't actually use a whole lot of VRAM, even on PC, and even with the highest settings. Crysis is the outlier here, because their engine has always been extremely RAM dependent, but the new engine is much more efficient.

How much does Crysis use then..?

Crysis3 uses 2.5GB on Ultra, the highest setting the game has, with all features turned on, 4xMSAA, etc. at 1080p.
Cysis is probably the only game where RAM is a GPU bottleneck, it isn't very efficient at all. Other engines can pull off similar visuals with much, MUCH lower footprint.

I'm getting tired of these articles, Xbox One just got announced go pick on that for a while leave Wii U alone, it's fine, give it 6 months and you'll see!

The target resolution is important as well. I personally believe that Wii U is a 720p console when it comes to the really demanding games, so with that in mind, the memory requirements are less. There is no point in using super high res textures when your diplay res is only 720p, you will never be able to tell the difference. Keeping in mind that while the 1GB of ram for games is pretty low compared to what the Xone and PS4 will have, its still over twice the amount that 360/PS3 had. So when your targeting a similar resolution, thats a pretty respectable increase. Also, the disk drive in the Wii U is far faster than the PS3 so it can stream in new data from the disk much quicker. Nintendo could always free up another 512MB of memory for games if they want to, and I wouldnt be suprised if that were to happen come the summertime update.

Yeah, Wii U doom and gloom is so last month! It's time to bash the Xbox One.

Maybe nintendo should stop keeping secrets on their hardware and what it can do. And iwata is surprised people thinks isn't underpowered because its sturggiling to keep up with 360 ports.
Nintendo has a bad history of handing dev kits out with very little information or tools. Its seems like they are working to improve this now, but it honestly didnt help the Wii U launch perception. If the Wii U had launched with ports that were all improvements over current gen like Need For Speed MW, then the perception of the Wii U being weak wouldnt be so prevelant. No one thinks its a powerhouse in disguise, but it is more capable than the vast majority of people think.

They tried that with the gamecube. How many Mario's again?

Yeah they tried real hard with the gamecube. They need to try again with Wii U. They need to show its capable at E3.

They don't need to talk about hardware to do that. They just need to show impressive software. Period.

Admittedly, there are a lot of market indicators that should make Nintendo worried, but, after hearing "Nintendo is dead" since the N64 days, they don't carry much weight for me.
Also, in regards to a refocus on Xbox One siren sounding, don't worry. If people thought that the consumer base response to the Wii U's initial presentation was bad, that is nothing compared to the ugly mess that is going on after Microsoft's conference this week.

Agreed. Gonna guess that after Christmas sales and this half of the year they have close to 4 million units. That's a decent headstart over the other two. Should have a bigger library of titles and have the bugs worked out of the system. And Xbox looks like it has too many constraints with used titles and internet connection mess. On top of that if the general economy starts picking up overall, I think Nintendo will be fine.
