My Nintendo News

There’s apparently some method to the madness of why Nintendo did not attempt to cash-in on the Wii’s beloved Super Mario Galaxy franchise – it was all about multiplayer. IGN’s executive editor Rich spoke to Super Mario 3D World’s director Koichi Hayashida and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi after the Nintendo E3 Direct to find out exactly why. Here’s what Rich had to say in his article:

“In short, the answer lies in 3D World’s emphasis on simultaneous 4-player local (only) gameplay. Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and Director Koichi Hayashida told me that when Super Mario 3D Land was in development, they believed a multiplayer element would be a fantastic addition to that style of game. Though the concept didn’t make it into that 3DS game, they believed the power of Wii U would allow them to fully realize those mechanics.

“Despite having its roots in 3D Land, Hayashida and Koizumi stressed that they are drawing from all corners of Mario’s action genre legacy. Bringing Princess Peach’s floating ability back from the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was a part of this, but so are the more eccentric and wild levels designs from the Galaxy. And there are plenty of smaller references too, such as the collectible green stars that Galaxy first introduced.”

In other words Nintendo liked 3D Land's concept better than Galaxy and thus 3D World was born, Thoughts?

As much as I love galaxy, I wanted an entirely new game, but if I knew they had 3D world in mind... I would have LOVED another galaxy...

Galaxy 3 wouldn't work on Wii U without neglecting the Gamepad. Interested in seeing how that would work.

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

I'm happy with this game. If they showed Galaxy 3 then I would like that too.
