I just really started getting into anime. I ordered Casshern Sins, Tekkaman Blade, and Deadman Wonderland from Amazon to start off my collection. Let me know what anime you'd suggest.

Every time someone asks for an anime suggestion, I suggest only the good stuff.

Kino's Journey

Serial Experiments Lain

Mushishi

Haibane Renmei

Ghost in the Shell

Akira

Two good beginner animes are Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.  They both have a good sense of variety to them and offer more than just typical violence.

Unless you are into action, I would only suggest picking up one action series to watch, once you've seen Dragonball/Bleach/Naruto, you've pretty much seen anything they could ever offer.

However, the classics are a bit different; Yu Yu Hakishou, Ranma 1/2, Ruroni Kenshin, and Trigun all have some variety, something the more mainstream stuff nowadays lacks.

Once you get into anime, you're going to see that a lot of the new stuff pretty much looks the same, all the characters look like plastic and the plots are either rehashed or the focus is on the sex-appeal.  The best thing I can suggest is looking up anime not of the current season, see what genres you like, and check out the user reviews.

Also, stay away from any anime that focuses more on sex-appeal than plot.  My list of what to stay away from is Rosario Vampire, Highschool DXD, Kampfer, Vampire Bund, Dokuro Chan, Vampire Knight, Highschool of the Dead, and pretty much any anime that takes place at a school and tries really hard to either be cute or sexual.

Someone better not recommend sword art online.

Here are some of the anime that I got hooked on when I first watched them:

Gurren Laggan

Shiki

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

Code Geass

Wolfs Rain

Death Note

Madoka Magica (don't let the cute characters fool you, the story is actually pretty dark starting from the 3rd episode)
