Nintendo has released a new firmware update for Wii U. Version 3.1.0 U provides improvements to the system's standby mode, allowing for a better download process while the system is hibernating - plus the standard, boilerplate 'stability' improvements that come with every release.

More importantly, however, Nintendo has noted that another update to Wii U "system functionality" is planned "between the end of September and beginning of October." Nintendo rarely calls out specific timetables for firmware updates, so this is likely the second half of its planned and previously announced firmware upgrades, the first of which hit this past April (Version 3.0.0 U). That last round of adjustments improved menu load times significantly, added background downloading, and much more.

Here is Nintendo's full account for 3.1.0 U:

Improvements to Standby Functions:

  • The standby functions will now regularly connect to the Internet when the Wii U is powered down to check for available SpotPass data or software and system updates. Software updates will be installed while the Wii U is powered down, and system updates will be installed the next time the Wii U is powered on. For further detailed information, click here.

Improvements to system stability and usability:

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

*A system update providing further additions to system functionality is planned for release between the end of September and beginning of October.

I can wait for the next firmware update. The last one was a breath of fresh air, hopefully this next one makes the software lightning fast!

I hope the next update gives me something legitimate to use on the console, something to keep me coming back without games.

Right now my Wii U is getting far too little use.

Like I said on Miiverse, the next update could really use some notifications popups, like on the PS3/360... It's annoying because sometimes I'm messaging a friend or a friend comes online while I'm playing a game and I won't really know about it until I go on Miiverse myself.

Also, I really hope this "stability improvements" include less system freezes. I've been getting a few of those, especially when I'm using the web browser. Am I the only one? Also, sometimes it happens on Wii Mode, but less rarely there. Aaaand, probably unrelated to Wii U's software, but do you guys have trouble with connectivity with your Wiimotes? Mine disconnects every now in then.  <_<

The delays are because they're just trying to get it right the first time, and didn't anticipate the manpower needed for the Wii U.

I have a question regarding the Wii U and its updates. I thought that the WIi U now automatically does the updates like the Wii would. I turned on my Wii U to play Injustice and I had to do it manually.

Its mentioned TWICE above "system updates will be installed the next time the Wii U is powered on".

Its only game patches that are installed in standby.
