Killed by a video game: Excitement 'triggered fatal heart attack of teenager who died while playing his Xbox

A teenager has died after suffering a heart attack while he was playing a game on his Xbox.

Jake Gallagher, 16, was playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the console when his mother Sarah Pyatt believes he became excited, triggering an undiagnosed heart condition.

He collapsed at his grandmother Irene Gallagher's house in April and was taken to hospital where he died two days later after being declared brain dead.

Mrs Pyatt, 46, said doctors told her Jake had Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

'Sonic the Hedgehog was his favourite. He would get over-excited, jumping up and down, screaming at the screen,' she told the Sun.

The teenager was rushed to Watford General Hospital, but doctors said his brain had been starved of oxygen.

Professor Sanjay Sharma, of St George's Hospital in South West London, said: 'There is a definite risk in predisposed young people playing video games that causes surges of adrenalin in the blood.'

Jake, who had Asperger's Syndrome, had not had heart screening, which has not been made compulsory by the government.

His mother has now joined charity Cardiac Risk in the Young in calling on the government to make screening mandatory in young people.

That's horrible. Not really a fan of the title of the article though. -_-

It's just another reason for people to blame video games.

What? He would get that excited over sonic? Jumping up and down, screaming at the screen? Wow. I think they shouldn't have been allowing him to play it if he got that excited.

But either way, that's terrible. I just hope people realise that there was obviously something wrong with him, and not that video-gaming has something wrong with it.

Sonic 2006? Maybe he finally completed the game or something. Either way i hope people don't blame video games again.

I honestly don't see how people could blame this exclusively on video games. If he died because of a large, sudden surge of adrenaline through his body, he could've died at anywhere remotely exciting. A movie, roller coaster, etc.

It'll be hilarious watching this get pinned on video games though.

I get excited like that at video games. I think I may have done that with the sonic adventures too. Mayhaps you shouldn't play video games if they don't excite you.

Why doesn’t Mario have an absurd crotch buldge holding in his 10 inch slice of manhood? Why doesn’t Yoshi look like a Fist of the North Starcharacter.

R.I.P this is sad indeed, BUT if he was getting that exited over a game, so much so that he was screaming at the screen he shouldn't of been playing. I wonder what it will take to stop people from blaming things on video games........

See now? Getting that excited doesn't mean you should stop playing. The only reason he shouldn't have been playing is because of his unknown heart problem but it was unknown. Getting that excited just means you're having fun. A lot of people jump up and yell when they accomplish something in a game. I know I did when I finally became a level 1 dark wraith in dark souls. It took me forever and I felt entitled to jump up and yell.

Anyway no one seems to be blaming video games. They're calling for mandatory heart screenings not a ban on video games. The title is just to attract readers.

That's pretty excited. Yeah, I get excited too, but not that excited. I could never see myself jumping up and down and screaming at the screen, that's just a little too excited for me :)

This is just horrible, the kid was just receiving a gift from his mother and died. I cannot imagine what the mother must be going through.

This is pretty messed up, I hope they do make screenings mandatory for kids.

If this kid was getting that excited over a Sonic game imagine if he was playing something like a survival horror.
