Nintendo Insider

Nintendo have shared that the Great East Japan Earthquake was partly to blame for their slow delivery of key first-party software for Wii U.
The devastating event saw the Nintendo 3DS lose momentum across the country, which saw the company concentrate their development teams on delivering software to see it recover. That decision ultimately lead to limited resources to spare for the Wii U, which is why there has been such a delay to the arrival of Pikmin 3, among others.
“We launched the Nintendo 3DS on February 2011 and sales were strong. Two weeks later we were hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and that stopped the momentum,” a Nintendo representative explained to Yahoo! Japan.

“In August of the same year we lowered the price from the initial 25,000 Yen to 15,000 Yen, and enhanced software development at the same time, to enrich the game line-up.

“That paid off and we regained momentum in Japan, but due to that we could not spare many developers for the Wii U (released in November 2012), and that led to the slow start of the console.”

Sounds like a valid reason. Let's just hope they starting pumping more games out soon

Yeah we have a decent amount of big third party and first party games coming out from October to December so let's just hope that continues into next year.

The 3DS was failing because it had no games, now they are blaming the sales of the 3DS on the earthquake & then blaming it for the problems the WiiU is having because they needed to put more resources into the 3DS.

Come on Nintendo, it's excuses on top of excuses now, it's getting silly, what will get the blame next ?

To be fair, this is Yahoo Japan. If we remember correctly, the earthquake was devastating to the Japanese economy. Any momentum they had locally was disrupted. It was, of course, compounded by the lack of software (and it wasn't exactly posting DS numbers).

The Wii U....I posted their dividend yields over the course of the boom period. They were dispersing large dividends per share as EPS increased. I do not think they were prepared to develop the HD games in the way they should have been, but, it is hard for a company like Nintendo to retain the earnings required to do so when the return will be so far away for the investors (hence why a lot of technical development is being outsourced).

It's a very valid reason, the earthquake slowed a lot up in Japan - I remember Nintendo saying something about it at the time.

Hopefully they can now successfully bring the Wii U in properly while maintaining 3DS numbers up as high as they have been.

Bring the noise.
