But while Carmack notes the similarities between next-gen hardware, he doesn't seem quite as convinced on the new Kinect. Calling Microsoft's motion sensor "sort of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency," Carmack clearly has some major issues with the device's functionality.

"Kinect still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and framerate," said Carmack. "It's fundamentally a poor interaction."

Wow, I guess the USB 3.0 Data transfer isn't really doing its job that well...

Of course it does, its an optical motion tracking device, as such its limited to the refresh rate of camera technology.

Its why Nintendo chose the wii's faster less accurate technology over kinect and move technology despite investing in optical control research. They decided on a super simplified 'camera' thats barely more than a 'dot' sensor, so that the refresh rate could be hundreds of Mhz, instead of a 60-120 hz.

That being said, I think Carmack is demonstrating a lack of critical thinking and ingenuity in this particular instance.

Obviously, kinect is ill suited for fast paced action. But there are more to games than fast paced action.

Kinect would be absolutely amazing for an in depth adventure game, with the main mechanic being hands on interaction with the virtual world.

The fact that there are people who are naive enough to believe what one developer who as far as we know is not even developing anything for Xbox One and Kinect in particular says baffles me. The original Kinect had a lot of potential a lot of which it didn't fulfill due to hardware limitations. People haven't even tried Kinect version 2 and are already dismissing it. Who knows what the performance will be right now. We will find out when the hardware is released along with games that use it.
