Just plugged a 160gb hd in the rear sockets and went to format but its been on the checking screen with spinning circle for 15mins now.

Crashed or normal?

Also is 5.1 only through the hdmi? (My amp does not support this).

If it doesn't have an extra power outlet, you may need to buy a Y-splitter cable.

I'm running it on a Y splitter but I'm sure the USB drives need mains supply. I have a caddy with mains so I will try that but its a bit old fashioned to have to plug a hard drive in the mains.

Should take about 10 seconds.

Is it beeping or clicking?

If it is, it's not got enough power to format/read/write.

Probably safe to plug out and back in as much as you like.

99% sure it is on that, since nothing is being done to the wii u itself.
