Why I want to develop for Wii U hardware

I'm in college for game development related stuff and if current info is to be believed, I can make a game for the Wii U for about $3000, for the price of the dev kit and Unity package. Many indie developers are going to be using Unity for making games for the Wii U, XBox One and PS4. It's just how the cookie crumbles.

Unity is not well multi-threaded. Many processes run on a single core and max out the single core of a processor. According to 3Dude, the Wii U has the most powerful individual cores of all three systems. Which means the Wii U will offer the most CPU performance for Unity games.

Unity is also not 64-bit in any practical way. Which means that you can't take advantage of more than about 3 GB RAM. You might as well develop for the Wii U's 1GB memory.

Really the only advantage the XBox One and PS4 have is much more GPU power.

You can ask me questions about any of this stuff, but keep in mind I'm still learning. It's not until you are learning that you realize how stupid you were.

If you want help involving storyline, ideas and that.... I can help, even involving music... I knew couple of people that are non-mainstream legends in my country, my dad is one of them. Want punk, metal, reagge, country or something else... I could help.

Its definately surprisingly powerful per core, but missing modern trappings like modern simd extentions, so its definately weaker there, though it does seem to be powerful enough to somehow fight its way through that.

Though I would stress that ipc is independent of clock speed, and given suffecient gains in clock speed a processor with a lower ipc can surpass one with a higher ipc.

I cant say for sure whether espresso's per core ipc surpasses the new jaguars, as we just donthave the hard numbers on espresso yet, just that the old broadway is very very close in ipc, and espresso has had several improvements that would increase the ipc.

What I can say with certainty, is that core for core, with the exception (maybe? Its a surprising bugger) of simd, its definately competitive with ps4bone cpu's.

Regaurdless, its more than a single man or small team would ever really need.


Also, keep that ouya devkit around. I suspect it might become a bit of an esoteric darling in the near future, amazing things tend to happen on 'dead' platforms. Might become a part of something special.

BTW where are you taking your courses? I got my computer science at Devry,and my f. arts,g-design, and media arts at the art institute of la.

I hope you don't mind me asking but what's your course like? I saw in an earlier topic it was Game Art and Animation and I'm curious about what/ how you're taught.

I hope you don't mind me asking but what's your course like? I saw in an earlier topic it was Game Art and Animation and I'm curious about what/ how you're taught.


I'm taking Game Art & Animation through the University of Advancing Technology, an Arizona based school which I'm taking online. So it's online college for me. I will be taught Game Art & Animation as my major. However, the school is extremely technology focused and wants to teach their students online etiquette, and also things which translate to Game Design, and things which translate to modern and advancing technology. So even though my major is art which is one of the categories that is the least focused on technology, I won't be getting away easily. Part of this school is what you make of it, but I will be making a game in Unity for the Wii U as one of my assignments, most likely.

Also, a big part of learning is student-based discussion boards.

That sounds pretty rough, at least from your perspective it does since you're an art major. Thanks for answering my question, I've heard on online courses but never actually heard what one was like from the perspective of a student. It was interesting. Hope your game comes out nicely and you do well on the course overall.

Did you check out the "development tools" in the browser yet?
lol, it starts a local webserver and just shows you the url on your tabs.
I don't really get how that's useful myself.

just learned why some insaine high graphics game require 64 bit then. other then that happy to have more future indie games.
