It's not exactly the same. In Battleship you can go until either you or the other person wins. In Salvator's Squid Game you're limited in the number of moves you can make. Any strategy I use always uses up all of my shots before I kill all of the squid, so I have to rely on blind luck.

I admit, as I have aged, I'm happy that Mario Games are not as hard as 1 or 3 .  I am happy with the level of difficulty in Mario World, NSMB, SMBU, 3D Land, and the Galaxy Games.  I didnt like Mario 64 ... too much open space and many times too easy to avoid trouble.  Hated Sunshine.

With regard to Zelda, my all time favorite is A Link To The Past, then comes Links Awakening ... never seriously played Oricales or Seasons.  Hated the Touch control games on the DS and have not liked the 3D Zeldas all that much ... I dont like fairies hanging around me and constantly nagging me, hated sailing in WW, dont even remember OoT, and was not crazy for MM either.  I have SS  but have not cracked it open yet but think I might like it.  I did not like using the wolf or dog in TP.

I think I will be very happy with Zelda, A Link Between Worlds ... tired of how zelda has been in 3D.

I say, as a player, you should have the option to turn off hint systems in Zelda games.

I make levels / sets for the PC game Ricochet Infinity, a modern brick breaking game, and I am considered a 'hard core designer' even when I try to make an easy set, or I have to water it down to pass the testers, my sets are still considered hard core .... the fact is, most players these days like games that are easy.

Nintendo games are all about challenge...

-New Super Mario Bros U was hard (W6 and beyond mostly). New Super Luigi U kicked your ass through W1 and beyond.

-The Donkey Kong Country series was challenging and we can expect the same with Tropical Freeze

-The 2D Metroid games for sure didn't hold your hand like you see with today's games

Luckily Wii U owners are friendly and helped

-Metroid Prime also didn't hold your hand. You improvise what's next. You get new items, head back, investigate, progress.

-the Legend of Zelda (similar to Prime), Fire Emblem, F ZERO, Punch Out, Sin & Punishment, etc.
