As most of you know, leading up to its release, I was incredibly hyped for Pokemon X and Y. And after over 100 hours and almost 2 weeks to develop an opinion, I feel obliged to post an opinion topic.
X/Y are definitely not the best the series has to offer. I found the soundtrack underwhelming compared to past entries, the plot is very straight forward, which is very disappointing considering how thought provoking Black and White's plot was. Super Training takes a long time and is pointless when you can learn about the wonderful that is EV Training off Horde Battles. Gym battles were very easy and required no preparation at all, even with the EXP. Share turned off, which brings me to my other issue with the game.
I played through most of the game with the EXP. Share turned on, but then I realized how overleveled I was becoming and turned it off in favor of a challenge. I have spoke with other people about their endgame levels, and most were 10-20 levels over mine. To think you can sweep the entire E4 with just one Pokemon your first time around is ridiculous. I feel like I have to handicap myself in order for the games to feel challenging.
The post-game is virtually nonexistent. There's one more town to explore, and some side quests. The post-game in B2/W2 was great, there was plenty to do and places to explore, and it makes me wonder why they didn't give this game the same treatment. Although a major complaint for some people, for myself it falls under the minor complaints. Between shiny hunting, EV Training, and online battling, there's plenty to do but these activities don't appeal to the average player.
I love the graphics. Battles have never felt so dynamic. The series has finally made the leap into 3D, and it transitions beautifully. All the Pokemon have brand new 3D models, and they look great. I'm a big fan of XD/Colosseum, so a portable title that has the feel of those games is great. The online features finally get some serious effort put into it, with a click of two or three buttons I can initiate a battle or a trade with someone on my friends list. It's a giant step up from previous entries.
Another great addition is character customization. No longer are you bound to the threads your mother gave you when you went out on your journey, you can buy your own clothes! Everyone looks different, so it coincides with the new online features fantastically.
Besides my complaints, X/Y are still a great games. They still hold the charm the franchise sells for, and that's training and battling with Pokemon. And with the new online features, I can challenge my friends to battles whenever and share that feeling of raising Pokemon. I will continue to play it until my eyes gorge out of their sockets.
