Firefighters from Engine 60 were called to the two-story bungalow at 19946 Dresden, near East State Fair and Hoover, at 6:30 p.m., unaware, they said, that it was the rapper’s former home.
The vacant house is now owned by the Michigan Land Bank, Eminem featured the house on the cover of his new album, Marshal Mathers LP 2, which debuted Tuesday.
The fire comes after Eminem fan Shelly Hazlett of Clarksville, Tenn., said she submitted a $100 bid for the home, and agreed to pay a $35 processing fee and a $500 deposit if the state approves the offer, according to MLive.com. Hazelett has said, the MLive article said, that she wants to turn the house into an Eminem museum.
The 747-square-foot brick house is listed on the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority website. The site was listed as the address of Eminem's mother, Deborah Mathers, from 1989 until 2003, public records show. It was built in 1945, has 1½ baths and a detached garage, according to online residential real estate site Trulia.com.
Real estate website Homes.com says the home of the former Marshall Mathers sold for $24,650 in December 2007; Trulia.com estimates its current value at $30,000.
A past owner of the house listed the home on eBay for $500,000, but received no bids, according to Detroit News archives.
