Yuck, I hate installing games. That carp annoyed me with the PS3, which is one of the many reasons I barely used it. That's definitely something I am not looking forward to when I get my XB1 next year.

Proof they optimized for the TV features more than games.

I was shocked at how fast Ghosts installed on my PS4. Nice to see it's like that for all games.

My guess is PS4 just installs a blank save file, maybe also registers the game with the update process so it can download and install updates as they arrive. The PS4 has a disk drive with way more bandwidth than the PS3, so it doesn't need to cache to the hard drive.

Listening to a recent Joystiq podcast I think the PS4 does install the complete game too. That said those times for the PS4 seem way off when you're installing games on it of the same size. I find it hard to believe its that fast.

According to here, Assassin's creed IV is 20GB. For it to install in 42 seconds, it would have to be copying to the hard drive at about 476mb/s. The Bluray drive is capable of - at max - 27MB/s. Even factoring in compression that would be pretty tricky.

On the other hand, I could be wrong. Kotaku seems to be saying the PS4 first installs the very basic files needed to run the game, then loads and installs files as they're requested. It's actually kind of brilliant, instead of Xbone's method of first having to block install all assets that the user can conceivably need before the game is finished installing.

Think he meant installing downloaded games. It's a different thing, though.

Interesting. That seems to make sense. That means they both use different methods for installing games then with the PS4 being more efficient. The only game I've installed on my Xbox One is Forza 5 and it took a pretty long time although I didn't measure it. Even the basic free version of Killer Instinct took a long time to download and its only about 3GB in size although that could have been because it was launch day world wide and loads of people were downloading it. Forza also needed a 6GB patch which added to its time. At least in both install and download cases you can start playing games whilst the process is still going on.

I'm not sure, but that sounds pretty awesome. I know Blizzard games have this cool feature where they install only the most important things first and you can start to play relatively quickly while the rest is downloaded in the background. Maybe the ps4 does something similar?

Yes, the PS4 isn’t installing all of the game in that time. It still streams content off the disc while the game is playing and depending on the game, you might have to wait between levels while it gets content. I don’t have an Xbone, but I imagine that the servers are a little slow right now with the launch. I remember being shocked how quickly the 360 downloaded retail games last generation, so likely it will be faster for you in the future.

Whatever the PS4 is doing to install so fast is impressive. Both Xbone and PS4 have separate processors for backround installs right?

Could PS4's HDD be faster than Xbone or have faster disc read speeds? An accurate explanation would be great.

There’s not enough difference in the hardware to account for that much of a disparity.

It sounds as if the console downloading updates while installing is affecting the process. MS has been instructing users to reboot without the network connected and installing from disc, which is significantly faster.

Those figures are inaccurate as they tell the times before you can play a PS4 game rather than the times both take to install the full game. The XBox One has to install the full game first, while the PS4 doesn't.

I've seen comparisons where both have to install the full game, and the PS4 ends up about 25% faster. So while the PS4 probably has a faster disc drive, the test results listed in this thread are a bit skewed.

The Xbox One doesn't have to install the full game before you can start playing it. I was playing Forza before it had fully installed and Killer Instinct before it had fully downloaded.

Xbone also downloads and installs any game updates during the initial game install.
