PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A gay teacher at a Catholic high school was fired Friday after he applied for a marriage license.

Michael Griffin was fired from Holy Ghost Preparatory School after administrators said his obtaining a license to marry his same-sex partner was a violation of his contract.

Father James McCloskey, the school's headmaster, said in a statement that faculty at the school are required to follow church teachings, NBC Philadelphia reported.

He said in the statement that Griffin's decision "contradicts the terms of his teaching contract at our school, which requires all faculty and staff to follow the teachings of the Church as a condition of their employment. In discussion with Mr. Griffin, he acknowledged that he was aware of this provision, yet he said that he intended to go ahead with the ceremony."

Griffin, who graduated from the school and has taught French and Spanish there for 12 years, said that his relationship with his partner of 12 years wasn't a secret from the school and that his partner had even been to McCloskey's house.

Griffin lives in New Jersey, which became the 14th state to recognize same-sex marriage in October

Typical from a school.

Hopefully he finds a new school soon and work. =/

It's real bad when someone loses a job but he should have known better. Hopefully and probably will find a job.

Dammit I knew I should've saved that link. Here's another:

The verses are Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. First, Thou shalt not lie with a man, as with a woman: it is abomination. Second,  If a man lie with a man, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

There is, however, a big problem with quoting Leviticus. The problem is that Christians are no longer under the Law . We do not live our Christian life by following the Old Testament Law.  The Apostle Paul makes this abundantly clear. It is not something fabricated to win an argument, or made up in the twentieth century, or manufactured to get around something somebody doesn’t like. It is clearly stated in the Greek scriptures. The Apostle Paul wrote it in Galatians:

All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” (Galatians 3:10)

If we rely on following the Law (the Torah, the first five books of the Bible) we are under a curse. The passage above, Galatians 3:10, contains a quote from the Law itself, Deuteronomy 27:26. According to Paul’s statement below, things have changed.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us. (Galatians 3:13)

It was Jesus’ death on the cross that rescued us from the curse of the Law. If we insist on following the Law and imposing the Law on others, we negate the cross of Christ, and repudiate Christ’s death on the cross.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

Pretty important stuff.

A lot of Christians say that's reason to support gay marriage, but it really isn't.

Yes much of the old law doesn't apply to us but, 1) some of the old laws still apply (see: the ten commandments) 2)only things that have actually been shown to be excused, Jesus and none of the apostles ever said anything about gay marriage being okay. In fact it says so no where in the bible, every example of marriage and love (even given by Jesus) is specifically man and woman. And if you believe the Bible is God's word, and what is in it is written to reflect his will, if he supported it, he probably would have mentioned it. Especially since there were numerous opportunities to do so.

Well I mean they're a catholic school, and they DO have to uphold catholic values (or else they're not really a catholic school...).

Like it said, they knew he was gay for 12 years, and they didn't do anything, they were cool about it (presumably). But getting married is really pushing the envelope, and the teacher said he knew he was doing it.

Unfortunately the author didn`t get it.
After Christ the apostles had to "re-teach" people that thought the Law of the Jews was the only thing to know and follow. But that changed with Christ: the Law is still important - as Jesus didn`t come to abolish it, on the contrary - but Jesus IS the one to follow. The Law became complete with Him.

You can read it here, if you want: http://www.biblegate...-Curse-Blessing

Well he shouldn't be teaching in a catholic school if his life is contrary.

Not surprised.

Violating contracts gets you fired. Next.

Yep. Jesus fulfilled the law, lived a sinless life , fulfilled the law perfectly and died for our sin (not his)to make a way for man to know God and be forgiven of their sin. Then rose again. Seems like a good God to me. And if God says a certain thing is sin, then it is, whether we like it or not.

And this man had so little integrity that he wants to violate the principles of the school and be upset when their are consequences. Pathetic really.

I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH YOUR DAFT INCONSIDERATE

use of the word than.

I think you meant then :)

But for real I agree with that last sentence. People be all like "I'm a Christian, but I don't believe ____ law."

If you don't follow the Bible then you're getting your rules the same place as everyone else. What defines you from, say, a Muslim or Jew?

Good point.

And I'm off to fix that horribly inconsiderate typo...
