I received a Wii U as Christmas gift, and I've been trying to complete the intial setup. The trouble is, when I reach the part about putting my Nintendo Network ID information in, it says that it needs to connect to the internet and do a system update as soon as I've entered my details (which I double checked). The thing is, I can't get past the setup to download said update, I've had a look around and I can't seem to find any answers :(

It may be do to the trouble the Nintendo's online services are currently experiencing. :(

I'll give Nintendo a ring tomorrow, see if they have an ETA on the maintenance.
