The Nintendo World Championship cart that we posted a few days back has just seen its eBay auction end. The winning bid came in at $99,902. Too bad the person that bid that much money didn't ever have plans of following through. The info below comes from the seller.

 

"The unfortunate reality is the second I approached the winning buyer with payment options, they retracted their bid claiming it was a “mistake.” I’m not offering the item to other bidders in the auction to see if any of them are honorable individuals. It may take me a while but that’s about all I can do for now. It would be nice if eBay were more seller-friendly, rather than 100% buyer protection focused."

I read that one of the gold versions sold for only $18,000 a few years ago, so it looks as though this guy was the victim of a lot of fake bids thanks to all the media attention this gathered. I agree with him about ebay's buyer protection policy; there should be consequences for these sort of people.

What point is an auction if you're not legally obliged to pay what you bid?

Honestly? That's a good question. Ebay is big enough that they can offer a pay-as-you-bid program where they hold onto the money until the end of the auction and then refund the losers.

Yeah, eBay really needs to do something about seller protection. As it is right now, it's really not hard to screw over a seller on eBay.

 

I know a friend who sold industrial stuff (nuts, bolts, pipes, car parts, etc) over eBay, sent a pair of brush motors (I think they were called that) for a car to a customer. The customer says they were the wrong size and wanted to return them. A few days later, they get the brushes back. Turns out, the customer sent them the old, used, filthy brushes instead of the new ones. My friend files a dispute, eBay files the claim in favor...of the customer.

 

I've yet to have a huge issue when it comes to customers, but this is just garbage. Don't bid it that high if you don't plan on buying it.

eBay definitely needs better seller protection, don't get me wrong, crazy things happen. I know people who had their kids bid and win stuff on their account without their knowledge. Stuff like that happens, but you can't do stuff like this.

Well, there was a special edition of Uncharted 2 that's worth a few thousand dollars. Quite a few Atari games are too.

i actualy just googled it. most of the rare versions of old games can go up to 1000. only a few xbox or ps2 games do, though the ones that were good still go for decent prices. and nintendos stuff lose value at near snail rates=/.

That's mainly because Nintendo realizes the power of the product, and doesn't just slash a game from $60 to $20 after 6 months every single release. They'd rather make a game that feels like a steal at $40-60 rather than make one that people would only buy at a great discount.

Had this happen to me 4 times last year, 3 times with a copy of disney infinity and once on my Xbox 360. Got my hopes up for nothing, I hate these kind of people.

You know how long it takes to get a refund.

Now think if you are bididing on something and they put a hold on your card for $60, but you end up lossing .

Then it will take 3days for your money to be refunded to you. And it's 5days for PayPal.

So now your account is short $60 so it the next day you find the same item for $50 your and all that was in your account was $70

Your be out of luck and unable to buy it.

 

 

Now I do believe that they should change some things for the sellers.

It would be pretty easy to flag a non payment and then ban that user from eBay.

That's why I like the new buy it now, where the buyer has to pay as soon as they hit buy it now. It just wouldn't work for bids.

If you were using a credit card (and it's plausible that would be enforced), the deposit would show up as a pending transaction (that you bank has cleared but not processed) which can easily be cancelled in the case you lose.

If I do debt it normally takes them 2daya to refund me the money. Must companies will just give me cash back.

Credit normally take 3-5days depending on where you do it.

The most important thing is that the buyer proves that he can and has committed to paying the deposit. I'd imagine that the deposit will be charged from the account upon winning. That at least should cause a fake buyer to balk.

It's a hold on your account so you can't use it and still gotta wait for it to be released, which is a few days.

 

The only thing they can do is verify the account for enough money to clear but then it's going to far as invading privacy.

 

Very hard to fix this problem. I agree there needs to be a fix but it's hard to change this.

I'd think you would have bigger problems if a hold on your credit card pushes you over your limit...
