I've found Windows 8 to be fine, once you set it to startup in desktop mode. just pin your most common apps to the taskbar (like Firefox, File Explorer, Word, and Inkscape for me) and you'll completely forget about metro.
Just bought a gaming PC

You can use a 360 controller on PC games as well. Wired or Wireless. if Wireless can get an adapter on ebay or amazon. Wired it's plug and play. Unless I am playing Serious Sam or a First Person view game I always use 360 controller.

I have found remapping the keys to the very same in each game or FPS helps a lot when trying to learn keyboard and mouse.
What spec are you guys running on your PC?

Not a rig juts a Laptop I got in 2012 when I got in disability but I love this thing. Editing HD videos to the steam games and lets me overclock and if I wanted I can add a second HDD or SSD.
Asus G75VW
Win7
i7 quad core but threads so acts like 8 2.3ghz overclocked to 3.1ghz
16GB DDR3 1600mhz of ram
1080P Screen
750GB HDD with second slot for expansion
Geforce 660M GPU. So a little older but ran everything I threw at it it. It's peak would be running Crysis 3 on medium I think. I also had it doing dual monitors a couple times at 1080p.
4 Usb 3.0 and one thunderbolt port
HDMI out.
I do have it hooked to a HP 1080P LED monitor and use a no name Gaming Keyboard. Just a normal Laser wireless mouse.
In October 2012 this cost 1400$ Best PC I ever owned.

16GB ram (4*4)
1080p screen
Geforce 770 GPU
2 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0

also when you get a monitor, if you havent already. dont get the monitor that changes color from direction, i forget what its called, but if the screen looks different from different angles, dont get it.
this costs about 1600 now. also dont bring a desktop on a plane.
that includes keyboard/monitor/and all the extra stuff.
