At GDC this week, Siliconera had a chance to speak with Damon Baker, Senior Manager of Marketing at Nintendo’s of America’s Licensing department. During our brief conversation, Baker said to us that are over 50 games coming to Wii U that use Unity.

“Over the course of this show, we have nine games on display,” Baker said. “We have 17 that are currently in the pipeline, that have been submitted. So they will all be out within the next two months.”

“And then, we have another fifty that are waiting in the wings, that are coming; so we’ve got a lot of Unity content on the way.”

Last year, Nintendo announced a partnership with Unity Technologies that would bring a Wii U-specific version of the popular game development Unity engine to the platform. The engine comes free with Wii U development kits, in order to make it easier for developers to get started with Wii U development.

In addition to the Unity partnership, Nintendo’s Web Framework—which is a development environment that enables Wii U development using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS—is part of an ongoing initiative bring more developers to Wii U, company president Satoru Iwata said last year.

“There are over a million Unity developers, including many in developing countries where the business of dedicated gaming machines is not prosperous,” Iwata said at the time. “We would like to create opportunities for these developers to have their games available for Wii U.”

Good stuff. Nintendo needs to continue doing these sorts of things to bring developers in to the Nintendo realm and help them thrive.

Yep there are about 10 really good indies games I want to purchase but wont have the time to play them all. Man MK8 is going to take up SO much of my gaming time. I am still working on Donkey Kong tropical freeze and i am really still enjoying Ghost online.

Psh only about 70 games? Get your carp crap together Nintendo! No more droughts!

Though this and the web framework, and the constant support I don't see why not every indie is heading to Wii U. :P

They have more than that. I would rather have QUALITY over quantity.

Yeah I know, me too. I was just joking about what people usually see when it comes to games.

Even if only 1/3 or 1/4 of the upcoming indie/third party games interest me thats enough.

me too! I am excited about the games coming to Wii U this year. I dont see a drought and people still complaining about Wii U not having games worthy of playing are ignorant. Even if Wii U will only be know as a 1st party and indie console tat is fine with me. the passion and NO EXCUSE approach the indies have towards the Wii U is truly a breath of freash air for me.

It gets even better:

Akinwale Lakeru works for Nintendo! :)

@GregWiggleton What's hilarious is that's just Unity. The amount of interest we have surrounding NWF is ridiculous. HTML5 ftw.
