Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge & SCE London Studio hit by layoffs SCEE confirms restructuring across UK studios. By David Scammell (@VG_Dave) On 25th Mar, 2014 at 11:00am

Multiple Sony studios have been hit by layoffs this morning, SCEE has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

UK studios Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London Studio have each been affected, and while total numbers have yet to be confirmed, VideoGamer.com understands that numerous people from each studio have been made redundant.

"Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive business can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects," a Sony spokesperson told us this morning.

"As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and have decided to make some changes to some of our European Studios. As a result of this, there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.

"Our first party development studios are key to our creative strategy and we are very excited about the future projects being worked on."

Evolution Studios is currently developing much-delayed PS4 racer DriveClub, with Guerrilla Cambridge having wrapped up work on Vita shooter Killzone Mercenary last year. SCE London Studio, meanwhile, completed work on PS4 freebie The Playroom last year and is rumoured to have been working on an unannounced PS4 title.

Sony adds that the "development of Driveclub will not be affected" by today's news.

The layoffs follow a wave of redundancies at Sony Santa Monica last month after the studio's unannounced new IP was cancelled.

I know right, people think gaming is the shiz these days when its mostly rehash. And this HD craze and hq textures add up to more cost, thus more lay off's and studio's closing.

 

Nintendo's the only one un-affected by the cost hits, becuase they frankly don't care that everysingle thing needs to look like a 4K movie.

They're breaking even, or making money on each console.
I don't believe they are losing any money on 6 year old tablet technology.

Not if you have dedicated conveyor belts in China forcing 5 year old children to put them together 18 hours a day.

why do they have to do this if they have the 'fastest selling console in history™'?

 

Their ad said that the ps4 is about letting 'the world's best developers expand play' or some unicorn tongue like that.  But it seems like it's actually putting developers out of business.  Or does this mean that sony's developers just suck and the ad was talking about someone else?

 

And since Wii U is the 'worst selling console™' then there must be a bunch of articles I'm missing somewhere about Nintendo firing a bunch of people.  Could someone link me to those?

Yep, when things are tough for Nintendo the President takes a salary cut to keep up employee morale and....DING DING...."let the world's greatest game developer's unlock their creative potential" rather than FIRE them.  Recent corporate behavior among the big 3 is very telling.  Sony and MS execs jumping ship just months after new console releases.  Developers getting fired.  Nintendo keeps course and will weather the storm better than anyone else.  Here's to you, Nintendo!
