what time frame are you thinking about for this? how far away might all of this be?

Nintendo waited five years with the Gamecube before bringing out the Wii and then discontinued the Gamecube two years later in 2008 - however the Wii U is not selling nearly as many units as the Gamecube so far and if that trends continue I'd expect Nintendo tyo bring out a new console in late 2017.

I thought I'd try to speculate about what Nintendo might do, based on their past and present.

Price range: $250-300. The Wii U proved that $350 is too much for the general public to swallow. The Wii was about $250 and practically flew off of the shelves. Any lower would incur too many compromises for the console to be enjoyable.

Performance: Improved but not shockingly. At the bare minimum I can see Nintendo taking what they learned from developing for the Wii U and addressing any bottlenecks they have found. My assumption is that the possible maximum would be just enough that, for example, Mario Kart 9(10?) is 1080p with six racers (two on gamepads)

Optional 2.5" internal hard drive: Most consumers would stick with disks and so won't need a lot of internal memory, but there will be a lot of people who will have a large digital collection and so need more than simply 32gb or even 64gb of flash memory. My guess is that there will be a pro bundle with a 500GB drive preinstalled, but there shouldn't be anything stopping you from fitting a drive of your own into the budget model.

Game media: Most likely the exact same format as for the Wii U, maybe with support for dual-layer disks for the few (third-party) games that need more than 25GB. Very few Wii U games exceed 10GB, and it's not very likely that the Wii 3 would drastically increase game size.

That's all so far that I thought of that I feel certain of. What do you think Nintendo will do?

$400.

Ps4 proved people are willing to pay for power.

Next Nintendo console needs to focus on power. Would be great if they had the most powerful system.

People are paying for the advertisement, it's been advertised really well. Sony made them think they needed power using advertising.

Actually no.

People gladly paid for a nicely spec'd machine that put out visuals that they were impressed with.

Killzone was a great start in that regard.

And with the recently released Second Son game, they are being rewarded.

$400 is nothing when you know you're getting some decent hardware.

Sony outlined what they had. Not much mystery. People wanted a next generation experience in console.

Ps4 promised that and is pretty much delivering.

With Nintendo, people saw old ports and games that didn't really try. That combined with intense secrecy caused gamers to be underwhelmed as they didn't really see an upgrade over last gen. Many here were even saying anything over $300 was too much.

But many of those same folks forked over $400 for the ps4.

So it's not a matter of price.

It's a matter of what that money buys you.

That said, I think the wii u is worth every penny. But it just took way too long for real wii u worthy games to come to market.

But I sincerely hope the next Nintendo home console is $400-$450. Why? Because it gives them a lot more room to pack the power into the system.

Let's be REALLY honest here. How many people do you think took a really good look at PS$ specs and accurately compared them to Wii U and Xbone.

I bet they at most searched "Why PS4 is the most powerful system". Probably not even that, and just heard someone say that the PS4 is "Like at least ten times better graphics than Xbox" and took that to be true.

People paid $600 up front for the first generation iPhone even though it's capabilities were effectively the equivalent of a $50 Nokia but with a touch screen and decent browser. I don't put much faith in the reasoning skills of  the general public.

I bought the first iPhone. The contact management, full featured email, full web browser, and visual voicemail were game changers.

As was the smooth multi-touch interface.

Those were not trivial matters that "barely set it apart." Lol

First phone they make and they completely rewrote the game.

Not bad.

I'm too young to be sure and too lazy to google, but didn't blackberry at least have fully supported email? I'm just guessing that since it was kind of considered the first big smart phone from what i've heard.

Yep, full email (push even, that was rare at the time). Admittedly it didn't have the iPhone's browser at the time *cough* but it was capable of running applications more sophisticated than a web page. I still wouldn't consider the original iPhone to be a smartphone, thanks to missing very core features (such as multitasking or copy-paste) that were pretty vital for tasks more complex than looking at cat pictures.

LG had a smartphone out before Apple.

In fact the idea of smartphones is really old in terms of mobiles. Even in 2002 you saw a lot of phone/PDA hybrids. Just like there were tablets in the 80's and MP3 players in the 90's. Apple just makes things hip so to speak.

My XDA did that for 200 irish pounds 5 years before apple big-dicked their way into the phone market with hype and hipsterism.

I expect a tablet-pc much like the p4, and different form-factors to seperate people who want a home console and a mobile console.
The same games on both, with the same features.
Probably more open to self-publishing, and android-market style crap.

QoL and this might end up in it being a phone, but I doubt it.
Iwata stated recently they wanted to get into consumer electrics, and this would be a great middle-ground with investors, creating your own android app store and product instead of just making games for other devices.
Both sides of the world would like a Nintendo phone I think.
But as i said, doubt it.

You never had visual voicemail before iPhone.

Nor a browser on that level.

Nor a multitouch interface.

And can we choose more family friendly adjectives next time? Thanks.

Original iPhone was a full blown OS X build.

True os. Didn't rely on java or web tech.

Apps were native.

So nothing like chrome at all.

Apple never claimed to invent the smartphone.

They just reinvented it.

Followed by everyone else who copied their form factor and os design philosophy.

When everyone else follows you, you've successfully changed the game.

Who cares about visual voicemail anyways? The standard way works well, and lets you access your voicemail when you're out of the country.

Exactly. Ie mobile. Which doesn't come close to what the iPhone Safari browser delivered.

If you don't know what visual voicemail is, then you can't say your old phone had it... Food for thought.

And windows mobile wasn't Windows like iOS IS OS X.

And multitouch is huge.

Once you use it, you'll know why.

It makes the old system really old.
basically you can see who left messages and when and choose which to listen to out of que.

Ever since iPhone came out with it, others have tried to imitate.

Lol, you kidding?
ie was like a browser on the computer back then.
Flash and rainbow barely existed like it does now, which means there was much less support.

It was windows enough...

No it isn't. Give me a single use for it, on a phone.
pinching photos is so dumb, i tap my photo to make them big. I don't understand people who need to pinch rainbow just to make them bigger, it's more work than a single tap.
