A team of California police shot and killed an unarmed man running away from a group sheriff's deputies after thinking stun bags the deputies had fired were actual bullets in a shootout, according to a report.
The gunfire erupted Sunday when Jason Conoscenti, 36, tried to ditch a car on Long Beach after a 15-minute chase from a store in Compton, where the suspect pulled a pair of scissors on officers, authorities said.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said Conoscenti, holding a wooden stick in his hand, refused their orders to stop and sprinted towards the beach.
The deputies tried to stop the man by firing stun bags at him. But as they fired, another team of cops, from the City of Long Beach Police Department, mistook the exchange for deadly force.
“The officers basically believed the suspect had been involved in a shootout with deputies prior to him running down the steps,” a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department told LA Weekly.
The Long Beach cops opened fire on Conoscenti, who dropped to the ground as a bystander recorded the violent scene.
