Sony is decreasing first-party support for the PlayStation Vita and focusing on indies and Remote Play to provide content, president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.

In an interview with Polygon, Yoshida explained that Sony's philosophy for both the PS Vita and the PlayStation Portable has always been to recreate a console-quality experience in a handheld. But while this worked on the PSP, Sony ran into difficulties with the PS Vita: "When we launched the Vita with Uncharted, it was amazing; PS3-like quality in your palm, but as time moved on, you are seeing PS4 quality and people's expectations for the graphic fidelity has gone up."

With the dramatic increase in graphical quality on consoles, the focus on handheld visuals and, consequently, the demand for games like Uncharted have gone down. Fortunately for Sony, Yoshida explained, indies have picked up the slack: "It's very fortunate that the indie boom happened and they are providing lots of great content to Vita. I think [indies are] actually the biggest star to help provide great content to Vita going forward."

When asked if this means that Sony will be making fewer first-party Vita titles, Yoshida responded, "I would say, yes, that's correct."

However, Yoshida also reiterated the importance of Remote Play in providing content to the Vita. The system, which streams games from a PlayStation 4 to a Vita, is one of Sony's main selling points for the handheld. The upcoming release of streaming service PlayStation Now will also bring games to the Vita, Yoshida said: "We are super excited about how people are using it. We will continue to provide more utility to Vita as a PS4 companion device as well as PS Now terminal."

Although Sony did not say much about the Vita at this year's E3, this month's sales numbers indicated that the Vita is selling better than in previous months. Recently, Sony also said that there is still a chance that a PS Vita/PS4 bundle will be made available.

The vita is in this nexus of death.  It was trying to be things it couldn't be to people who didn't really want it.  Anymore, Sony doesn't really consider it a unique gaming system that can stand on its own two legs, but rather a PS4 accessory with lots of indies and ports.

Reposted from my status on this yesterday:

I'd make a joke saying we should dig a hole to bury it, but I think Sony might be content to do it themselves.

No they didn't. Misleading Title.

They just have a dumb view how to sell it in the US. Well they always did not a dumber view. In Japan however it's selling well.

This game is coming west soon and looking forward to it

Oh and this

Yeah it's indie and normally counts as download but not for me..teeh hee getting is physical.

I love the Vita Dragon's Crown,Gravity Rush,Ys Memories of Celceta. I will continue to love my Vita

So when a Sony console is failing, it gets less first party games...

When a Nintendo console is failing, we get this year's E3...

Sony is NOT killing the Vita, just merely reducing the amount of first party support it gets.

I really do think it is in Sony's best interest to focus on the PS4 as of now.

Bad excuse, look at the 3DS, worse graphics yet sold better than the Vita. There not making games for the Vita simply because they couldn't sell it.

The Vita was dead a long time ago when Sony decided to charge an arm and a leg for sub-par proprietary micro SD cards for the thing.

That being said, I love it and am saddened that it's not getting a large amount of support from Sony themselves anymore...wonder what this means for Gravity Rush 2?

Yes Sony, this is totally what the vita needs right now.  People didn't buy the vita for unique vita games that show the system's power, but for iOS and Android games.  3 strikes, you're out.
