Mario Kart on the Wii U is really good. Unfortunately it's just one game -- and it looks like it won't be enough to rescue the Wii U's sales. Nintendo apparently agrees, stating that its 9.9 billion yen loss was due to a lack of hit titles outside of the flagship racer. Matter-of-factly, Nintendo said:

"The operating loss was 9.4 billion yen because total selling, general and administrative expenses including fixed expenses exceeded gross profit. "

Which is, well, exactly how you work out an operating loss. The company is now betting on the power of Super Smash Bros. as well as the best-selling Pokemon series to improve results later this year. Wii U console sales have improved in the Americas and Europe: 510,000 units were sold worldwide in the last three months, compared to 160,000 in the same period last year. In Japan, however, Wii U sales have decreased year-on-year. Revenue was 8.8 percent higher than the same period last year and Nintendo is hoping its plans for a series of console-connected toy figurines along the lines of the hit Skylanders series will help to improve that bottom line.

 

Mario Kart 8 managed to sell 2.82 million copies so far, meaning that relative to Wii U console sales, most players already had the games console to play it on -- and that it wasn't quite enough to convince other consumers to buy what could possibly be a second console.

It's true and now that we know this, nothing can save the Wii U now, not even Smash. It's destined to produce Gamecube numbers, and that's a fact.

I say wait until july numbers before we say what it will and wont do. Fact is the console is selling better and should Win the holiday season with a smash bundle with free game al la MK8. This gen is just starting either way gamecube came in 3rd place for 6th gen i dont see that happeneing i think WiiU lifetime slaes will beat out XB1... Just my opinion.

They were offering the system, a wiimote, and two games for $330 and they still couldn't move units. Nintendo's top brass really need to start looking at themselves in a more critical light. They try to act like they're not in competition with the rest of the industry but they are, simple as that. If you don't play to win then you're going to lose. They can't keep pretending they're the only game in town, the gaming industry has never been more competitive.

Sales increased in Europe over 600% and in the US WiiU sales quadrupled and those bundles sold out. So they moved many units and also it's pretty freaking impressive they moved almost 3 million copies of MK8 in one month. We don't have the numbers for July so you can bet this game might sell 4 million before the end of 2014. The issue seems to be the bundle might have taken a loss and marketing and such so stuff is selling but the costs of bundles and marketing and giving out free games. Might have put a dent. Also kinda Nintendo's own doing when they give us droughts MK8 in May and next game is...August. Eh they should have given us something this month IMO. Bittsweet news but starting in August til years end be a string of releases so hope it bumps the WiiU some.

Is it the lack of marketing and advertising?  B/c they made a hell of a game,hell of a deal.  They probably should have done the McDonald's deal in May. But maybe Micky D's wanted to focus on World Cup.

 

For Nintendo's sake, I'm kinda sad.  But the flip side is that there's a lot of very cool looking games coming out in the next year to year and a half.  And, at least some of the press is changing their tune about the console. While Nintendo has made mistakes, the Wii U is a system very much worth owning.  

 

Last year at this time, while I had a lot of fun on it, I had a hard time recommending it to friends (I didn't give it a thumbs down by any stretch- I just couldn't come up with any "must have type games).  the case is pretty compelling with its line up now and will be even more so in the next year.

while this may be true for now, Mario kart 8 will have a big draw holiday season, coupled with smash bros. we're going to see mk8 sale well through out the year, and eventually it will be new adopters.

If Wii U sells as little as Gamecube then that doesn't bother me, it won't stop quality games from being released and that's all that matters.

Gamecube sold poor but has some of the best games ever made.

I don't see any information in the article as to what period that is for. I'm guessing it's 7/1/13 - 6/30/14? If so, Mario Kart only came out in May so the vast majority of those numbers are sales before Mario Kart 8.

 

Right now the Wii U is narrowly outselling the Xbox One. 59.1k worldwide sales the past month over Xbone's 57.7k. And we're over 2 months now after MK8 release so it looks like Wii U is getting some sort of permanent bump from MK8.  No, of course the Wii U isn't going to be a huge hit or even come remotely close to PS4 numbers but I think when it's all said and done it will have OK lifetime sales.

 

6 months ago Wii U was selling only 39k monthly. 24k monthly prior to MK8.

 

Atleast we're not in last place. I hope Wii U can hold it's edge over Xbone.

 

I still get frustrated with all the negative press Wii U gets yet it's outselling Xbone and you never seem DOOOM articles about Xbone.

Pretty sure those figs only include June and July will be reported for the next quarter.

 

As mentioned above, the sales figures mean very little to me personally.  I'm not invested in Nintendo.  they are making quality games, and that's what matters most to me.  But I do want to see Nintendo do well because I like their products and think they are a good company.  I don't think next quarter will be much better, so Christmas will be huge.
