I think I remember it costing around $100 to fix.
But that was just the screen that got busted for me.

I say just get the replacement from Nintendo. It's cheaper than buying another Wii U, even if it was a used one. And then keep it in a safe when you aren't playing it.

The real pain is you can't acess the settings or the store without the gamepad. They need to modify this in a patch for this reason - if your gamepad breaks the system is largely unplayable. There is no reason why the other controllers shouldn't work in the settings menu and eshop.

5.1.0 also brings with it the ability to use the Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller or Classic Controller to navigate the Wii U eShop — something which previously was only possible when using the GamePad.
