Nah was not a fluke. They made the game more accessable to newcomers. Older games are not very welcoming for people new to the series or SRPGs. Don't forget many people are hyped for SMTXFE
I played one of the GBA fire emblem games when i got it from the ambassador program. didn't have any problems getting into it 
Also what made me want to get awakening.

Also what made me want to get awakening.
Go play Thracia 776 then get back to me or any of the Super Famicom games. Awakening also was the first game so that deaths are not permenant..at least as an option. Quite a few of the games have one setting. Balls in a vice.

Well yeah, nes and snes games are notoriously "hard" in comparison to today's games in general.
