It's no more the best game of all time than Donkey Kong Country SNES or Mario RPG is. Less so, in fact.

I played all the way through Final Fantasy VII and the scenery and graphical perspective were good, but that's about it. Final Fantasy VII was the first game in which Square started botching the storyline, turning it into a schizophrenic mess of a story.

Now a much better game is Final Fantasy VI SNES/GBA. It did suffer from the occasional Star Wars similarity (Locke is Han Solo, etc), but it was still how in my mind, a Final Fantasy game should be. Fantasy meets science fiction in a beautiful game.

More than slightly. It's far from the best but far from the worst. It's kinda in the middle really. Final Fantasy VI is the best. VII is kinda meh with a rubbish story. It juts got hyped like it did because first one in 3D and introduced many people to RPGs. Like Ocarina it gets far more praise than it deserves.

VII is not the best in the series or even the best that came out on PS1. Far from it. Personally I think IX is a better game. It felt like the 2D FF games in 3D.

I just remember being so draw into the story. Maybe it was just because of the new and flashy cut-scenes that I don't believe were common at that time. If I had to think back at times I guess it was a bit of a mess but I still really enjoyed it.
