I saw a Doom Clone using Game Maker that only used 2D images, no 3D models at all. In the level editor, there was nothing but an overhead view with 2D images in them. Programming would create a camera and sort the small 2D images into big 3D tiles.

I assume that's pretty much how they used to do it. And if you can do all that, you can easily place a sprite in front of the screen for a game like Mario Kart SNES.

Now I'm pretty sure Zelda: Ocarina of Time was 3D. But had hardware not advanced far enough, they could use programming to make something that looks like Zelda: A Link to the Past in a level editor, to turn into something that looked like Zelda: Ocarina of Time when you pressed the "Run game" button or whatever button your tools had.

Anymore though, things are crafted much more how they will actually look. But imagine making a game back then! You needed even more talent than you do now, I assume.

Well, the use of computers has naturally gotten easier as time passed and people started to figure out short cuts. I still remember with something less than fond feelings the old DOS days.

That would be the original dooms engine, or raycasting engines in general.

Faked 3d and sprites each drawn from 8 angles.
