Not really a shock to people with brains, but you'll get $50 if you had a ps danny devito at launchish

So, what exactly drew the FTC's ire?

  • Implicit promises of crossplay support with all PS3 titles when it only worked with certain, specific games
  • Misrepresentation of the concept of "cross saves" and its application in games
  • Misrepresentation of the 3G Vita's multiplayer functionality
  • Deceptive ads disguised as non-affiliated Tweets
Those who qualify will receive $25 in refund or $50 as credit. Sony is supposed to email owners soon about how they can get their money.

Another blow to Sony's struggling handheld console

Sony is set to reimburse customers who bought its PlayStation Vita after complaints that a TV advert for the handheld console made false claims.

The ad said the cross platform facility allowed users to start a title on the larger PS3, pause it and "pick up right where you left off" on the handheld. It also said it allowed them to take part in a two-person multiplayer game in which each player would use a different one of the two devices.

It added that the remote play option allowed consumers to "tap into" the PS3 to let them play one of its titles via the Vita while "on the go", providing access to more complex games than the Vita would otherwise be able to run.

However, the FTC took issue with these claims, saying:

  • The cross platform feature was only available to a few games, and not all of them as implied
  • When cross platform was offered it was more limited than shown. For instance in the baseball game MLB 12: The Show, the option could only be triggered after finishing an entire nine-inning game, rather than mid-action as the ad depicted
  • The ad failed to make clear that to make use of cross platform, the user needed to buy two versions of the same game
  • Multiplayer gaming using both devices together was in fact impossible
  • The remote play facility only worked with some games, and the one used to show off the facility - Killzone 3 - was not among them. In fact, "very few, if any" PS3 games of similar size and complexity could be played on the Vita

In addition, the regulator said it was unhappy that Deutsch sent a company-wide email to its staff asking them to post positive comments on Twitter using the hashtag #gamechanger.

To qualify for the pay-out, users must live in the US and have bought a Vita before 1 June 2012. Those affected should be able to choose either a $25 (£16) cash or credit refund, or a $50 voucher, which can be spent on a selection of video games or other services.

Anybody on here effected by this?

I find this interesting because I saw on another forum that someone had posted "pros and cons" of 3DS vs Vita and they claimed you did not need to buy the same game for each platform to allow cross play on vita. They said purchases were transferred between the two consoles, unlike Wii U and 3DS.

Huh. Guess my memory wasn't bad. I totally remember the Vita being marketed as a portable PS3. This would explain why that still hasn't happened. Fun.

Edit: Poor wording I know.

Fangirls gonna fangirl.

It's like how they don't accept wii to wii u transfer is a thing but ps3 to ps4 isn't.

Yeah, I don't feel cheated either. I don't play it as much lately but there are still games I want to pick up for it.

This statement is false. The previous statement is true.

RIP in peace Nintendo.

Yeah, I'm the same way. Got mine in June(Based Lite Bundle) and for a Retro Throwback/Lower Budget title machine it's not terrible. I just wish Sony didn't treat it like a sidenote. Everyone yells at Nintendo for not supporting both their systems equally but Sony who has arguably more favour with third parties/more overall studios they can work with, but yet they at least TRY and support it. Sony has basically left the Vita to die.

Sony is the "company for gamers" that lies to its customers!

And Nintendo is the "old school dying snobbish anti consumer company" that doesn't.

Ticks me off so much that people are that stupid.

Vita is great for weeb tier games. I have no regrets picking up one at launch. I don't like how support has been dropped, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

It's a shame I got rid of mine over a year ago, so I won't be able to take advantage of this.

I can't think of a situation in recent history where Nintendo has been known to do so. Only possible one I can think of is the fiasco with smash getting streamed at EVO, where they said it was just their legal department doing the bn and that they didn't necessarily approve. And you can't really prove that's a lie - it could be true.

Nintendo did say they wouldn't redo the 3DS beyond adding more battery power and other minor adjustments. They've effectively released a new handheld in the New 3DS.

They always release a better version each time so people should expect it. They have done it that way since the begining. Consoles get downgraded.
