For all the hate that is talk and written about the wii u, developers are trying to get gamers to vote for their characters to be a playable character in smash when most of them have stated that they are not putting any of their game on the wiiu so why should we vote for a character that the developer thought was unworthy to put on the wiiu.

Because the character is respected in an artistic sense more so then the company itself. Gamers invest more in a character then the company behind the character imo. Be specific, who are you talking about?  I don't think it matters if developers are trying to get the word out on their characters to be in SMASH, heck it's a nice viral marketing effect of the ballot itself. Worry more about which characters you care about and want to see in the game more then what a 3rd party dev says or does.

and I wouldn't worry, in the end Nintendo has the right to decide what character is approved for SMASH, no matter what the actual ballots say... specfically speaking of 3rd party characters of course

Personally, I think a character's inclusion should be more based on their legacy and less on the platform that their games usually are on/the company that they belong to. Examples include Snake, Banjo Kazooie, etc.

What more or less ticks me off are all of these random indie devs coming out of the woodworks with just one game to their name (Some of which aren't even that great), begging fans to vote for their characters in the ballot. Examples include: Gunvolt, Adventure Quest, Super Meat Boy. That Super Meat Boy one is especially insulting, considering it was supposed to be a Wii exclusive and then the developers turned around and ported it to everything else at the last second.

The only real exception I'd make to the 'indie devs' part is Shovel Knight and Pixel (Can't remember the name) from Cave Story, more or less because both have created their own Nintendo legacy. In fact, aside from PC/Mac/Linux, Cave Story is still console exclusive to Nintendo platforms.

You stated legacy of a game. Let define that word when it comes to video games. Legacy in gaming is a game when gamers and fans hear it they know that it will be great and that it may have an average one it cannot have a bad one.

I mean games that've actually had a legacy. Legacy in gaming would apply to things that've actually had a huge impact on the gaming industry, not just some random gamers deciding a game is amazing or awful. Cave Story had a huge impact on how we view indie games, and was also console-exclusive to Nintendo platforms. Just a character that had a huge, positive impact on the history of gaming.
