The question is, should I get two Vitas or two New 3DSes for a multiplayer experience?

For 3DS it really depends upon the game for local multi-player, some games offer download play where you just need one cart while some require two game carts. I would look into the games you may be interested in playing together first before making any decision.
Others will chime in i am sure.

Do it. Pretty much Guardian Heroes 2.

I've played Code of Princess in the past and loved it!!!
I preordered two special edition Zelda 3DSes, and one Zelda Triforce Heroes game.
I realize that Triforce Zelda game is only 1 or 3 players. A Game Informer article said so. Well, I'm having a friend bring a 3DS for that game. I know someone who likes Zelda.

...and Monster Hunter 4 can be played "locally" multiplayer, even though you connect through the internet.

It's one of the best multiplayer games on the 3DS.
Add me on Wii U if you want to settle it in Smash

Interesting question. I have a plain 3ds XL and just got a Vita two and a half months ago. I love both systems, but really haven't played much multiplayer even on my 3ds. I don't know anybody else with a Vita. It is kind of cool how a 3ds allows you to play multi-player on one cartridge (tho I believe that Smash Bros. is an exception).
The New 3ds is said to have a better battery than its predecessor. I've been very impressed with the Vita's battery, especially it's standby mode. One thing that sucks about the Vita is that its memory cards are expensive as hell. Plus, because the Vita is a more powerful system, a lot of its games require more memory. This is somewhat offset by better and more frequent sales- I'd recommend getting PS Plus, even just for the Vita. I think I have gotten my money's worth out of it, even after just a few months. The 3ds has the better library, but don't believe people when they say that the Vita doesn't have anything to play. There's a ton of good games. Granted, it doesn't have the ones that are close to our heart as Nintendo fans, but it has a good library. I also like the Vita's bluetooth capability. It's really cool for speakers. One other thing tho, I think the 3ds is a more rugged design.
Anyway, this is my rundown of the two systems. The Show is excellent. And- as a side note, I like Sonic and All Stars Transformed better on the Vita than the Wii U. The graphics aren't as good but the controls are much tighter.

I ended up having to cancel my preorder of two Zelda New 3DS XLs for financial reasons, and I ended up with just a plain New 3DS XL and a 2DS. And man, are there multiplayer games to play. I'm pretty happy with my decision. Plus when playing single player games, I still get the best experience, due to one of the systems being the New 3DS XL. So like, you can still play Xenoblade as well.

Cool- I'd have a hard time either talking you out of buying a Nintendo product or trying to convince you that you made a bad choice. If I had to choose one over the other, I'd take the Nintendo product b/c as I mentioned, they have games that I'm more passionate about. That said, the Vita is a fun system too. Maybe down the road after a price drop, consider getting a Vita as well. I've had fun on it and you can get most games for under $20, which I think is a pretty decent deal.....
