Let the hype, rumors and speculations begin!!!!

from Nintendo everything:

http://nintendoevery...-leading-chips/

Nintendo has started to distribute a software development kit for the new NX system to third-parties, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The publication cited “people familiar with the matter” in its report. Nintendo could introduce NX “as early as next year.”

The Wall Street Journal also briefly touched on NX’s form. It isn’t absolutely certain what shape it will take, but the publication noted that “Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use.” Additionally, the company apparently intends to include “industry-leading chips in the NX devices” following criticisms about the Wii U’s power and the console’s inability to stack up against the competition. All of that information is said to have come from those “familiar with the development plans”.

Finally, The Wall Street Journal’s article briefly touches on the NX’s release timing. Having spoken with analysts, there might be reason to believe that Nintendo will be looking to bring it out relatively quickly.

“We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U,” analyst David Gibson told The Wall Street Journal.

We won’t be hearing or seeing NX – at least in any official capacity – until 2016.

I hope that the NX will come out in 2017. That would be five years for the Wii U, and give developers and Nintendo time to make games for it. Don't make the same mistak you made with Wii U.

I believe it will be releasing by 2017 since software kits are just now being shipped.  These early dev kits may be for 3rd parties to ready game previews , ports, and demos when Nintendo finally unveils the hardware.  Since they are using "industry leading chips" this could very well mean that NX is going to be more powerful than the current gen consoles out now and hopefully easier to port.  We shall see.  I can almost guarantee though we are going to have a lot more rumors on specs  and more leaks once third parties get their hand on these kits.  Get ready for the spec roll-a-coaster!!!

You see, a console handheld hybrid would make complete sense for Nintendo.

...And because it would make sense we can confirm its not true.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Why would it be untrue just because it makes sense? Nintendo's actions make sense all the time, just you cannot look at industry statistics and expect them to apply.

it's cool to say that Nintendo doesn't know how to run their business

I'm equally hyped and skeptical about this concept.

A unified console would mean that you can play all new Nintendo games without having to buy two platforms (Wii U and 3DS right now). It would allow for the same titles to be played on the go and on your TV. It would be backwards compatible with Wii U and 3DS because the handheld could be used as a Gamepad/second screen. Gamepad-like ideas (second screen maps etc.) could still be applied. The console would be powerful enough to gain respect and 3rd party support.

This sounds like a dream, but could it work?

"industry leading chips" would be very expensive. The PS4 is $350 right now. It's a console with a normal controller. The NX would have to be more powerful and deliver a second screen at the same time. The handheld part of NX would need its own CPU, GPU, RAM, you name it... This together would cost at least $500. The current customers who would buy a 3DS are those that probably don't want to spend a lot of money on a platform. NX would be more expensive as a PS4 or Xbox One. This is problematic.

From the information given, it sounds like NX will be both a console and a handheld bundled together. A console to plug into your tv, and a handheld for on the road. I assume the handheld would be the controller? Processing power on the handheld would be a lot weaker than on the console version. Now if the NX wouldn't be trying to compete with PS4 power specs, we could have something more realistic..

A handheld device that you can connect to your tv. Imagine a handheld with the power of a PS3 for example. You could take that on the road, but you could also stream it to your TV (think of something like ChromeCast). This would be more likely to sell than an actual hybrid console, meaning two seperate devices.

I can't wait for third parties to use it for about 6 months before never touching it again.

That would be a large up-front investment but for people who care about mobile gaming it wouldn't be any more expensive than buying a console and handheld separately. If you consider a console launch price of around $400 and a handheld launch price of around $200, you're actually saving $100. Then there's the fact that you wouldn't need to be different sets of games, thus saving a huge amount on games.

It'll be an advantage for me. I don't need Nintendo to be the best-selling console to enjoy it.

But maybe the value proposition on top of the supposedly industry-leading tech will draw more consumers?

@ Kokirii

I agree and think with the NX possibly being portable and home console will give an advantage as well to those who may enjoy one play option over the other.  This machine could be sold as a bundle or as just a portable or just home console given if the home console also uses a standard controller like the pro controller on the Wii U.  Consumers could have options on how they want to buy the console and if the NX is without a optical disk drive the console's price may be priced aggressively and more consumer appealing at say for example $249.99 for the stand alone home console or handheld version by itself or $499.99 for the complete package of both handheld and home console.
