Considering that the patent mentions 'cable or satellite set top boxes (STBs) and digital video recorders (DVRs)', this could have something to do with an earlier claim that Nintendo is talking with “major media companies” for content on Wii U. While it isn't all that surprising that the controller could be used in some way to control digital media on the Wii U, perhaps it could also be used in a similar fashion to the Battling AR helicopter and other augmented reality games that Nintendo and developers think up.
With all that has been announced and the news that's yet to come regarding the Wii U at E3, this certainly will be an exciting generation for Nintendo gamers.
