According to a U.S. Patent for configuring the remote control functionality of a portable device, a system like the Wii U controller could be used as a Universal Remote Controller.

This invention relates generally to remote control systems and, more particularly, to a system and method for facilitating the set up and configuration of a portable device, e.g., a smart device which may incorporate universal remote control functionality, to command operation of one or more types of remotely controllable appliances of one or more manufacturers. Exemplary smart devices include but are not limited to Apple's "iPhone` and "iPad," Google's "Android" platform, Nintendo's "Wii U" controller, Blackberry's "Torch" or "PlayBook," etc. Exemplary types of appliances include, but are not limited to televisions, digital video disc players (DVDs), cable or satellite set top boxes (STBs), digital video recorders (DVRs), audio video (AV) receivers, thermostats, game consoles, lighting systems, etc. — Source

Considering that the patent mentions 'cable or satellite set top boxes (STBs) and digital video recorders (DVRs)', this could have something to do with an earlier claim that Nintendo is talking with “major media companies” for content on Wii U. While it isn't all that surprising that the controller could be used in some way to control digital media on the Wii U, perhaps it could also be used in a similar fashion to the Battling AR helicopter and other augmented reality games that Nintendo and developers think up.

With all that has been announced and the news that's yet to come regarding the Wii U at E3, this certainly will be an exciting generation for Nintendo gamers.

Now isn't this something. I can imagine the Wii U controller being used as a universal device but it seems too good to be true.
Nintendo really wants to pack everything they can into the UPad if this is a fact.

It has IR LED's so I don't see why not.

hmm why is there only 2 comments on this
I still would like to believe the controller could be on in a "minimal mode" without the console, if that's the case it could be used for other purposes, like a controller, weather watcher, or simply to turn on your tv and wiiu simultaniously

into less possible ideas, tv streaming can go though cable box to wiiu to remote, and you could dual watch things with the controller speakers that hopefully do not suck

That would be awesome if it actually happened.

Yeah, you've done a great job so far, letting the Metal Heads destroy the palace.
