http://wiiudaily.com...aster-than-wii/

A report obtained by Wii U Daily suggests that the Nintendo Wii U CPU is based on the IBM 710 Express chip, but is underclocked at 3 GHz and comes with 4 cores and 8 threads. The new CPU is said to be 20X faster than the chip found in the original Wii console.

Wii U Daily’s Japanese source, which originally leaked the Wii U system specs, now elaborates on the main processor. The Wii U CPU, as we know from Nintendo, is made by IBM and is based on their POWER 7 architecture, and will be built on 45nm. The new details reveal that the Wii U CPU is modeled after the 710 Express IBM server processor, which as standard has 6 cores and runs at speeds of up to 3.7 GHz. The 710 Express chip can also execute 4 threads per core at the same.

In order to save on production costs, Nintendo has scaled down the processor for the console. The Wii U version of the CPU will scale down the cores to 4, the clock frequency to 3 GHz, and threads per core will go down from 4 to 2. This means the Wii U CPU will be able to execute 8 threads at the same time. The current Xbox 360 CPU, also made by IBM, can execute 6 threads at the same time.

On paper it looks like the Wii U is “around 50% more powerful than current gen systems” as analysts suggested last year, but in reality, the console is likely to be much faster than the raw numbers suggest. This is due to the new features and the architectural improvements of the POWER 7 design. Overall, the Wii U CPU is said to be 20X faster than the IBM Broadway chip found in the Wii.

While Nintendo isn’t expected to reveal any CPU or hardware details at E3, the NDAs developers signed will likely expire after E3. This could pave the way for developers to share some of the specific hardware design features of the Wii U, including the CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. We’ll have to wait until then to see whether this rumor holds true.

What do you think?.

Well E3 will show us how powerful the console is when we see exclusive in game footage. Will it be able to look SIGNIFICANTLY better than Naughty dogs the last of us or EA's medal of honor. We will see? All in all it will be a great system and 1st party games WILL look next gen. Even the Zelda demo confirmed by lots of analyst was better than anything on current gen. Nintendo is smart they will make this work. They will give us the best bang for our buck.

We'll just have to wait until E3.

I thought the 360 was like 6 times faster than the wii? which would make the wii u trump the 360 by a fair amount. Don't read this as fact, I may have pulled this out of thin air...

I think the person that reported it saw the GHz and the number of cores and compared it to the Wii's hence the 20x thing.

My cell phone is 20x the wii lol. The Wii was a suped up GameCube (which Nintendo had been developing it's GPU and CPU since 1998) so it's over 10 year old tech with some older motion controls added in. I expect the Wii U to be a beast for a Nintendo console but this rumor coming from Wii U Daily sounds fishy (I still remember them posting about 768mb eDRAM LOL)

I think it was close to confirmed that the Wii U would have three cores with the DSP negating the need for a fourth core.

Even though the source isn't creditable, I still believe the specs. The POWER7 can be anything from 4 to 12 cores, and everything sounds reasonable. It's what I expect the specs to be at. To me, the CPU has never been the mystery -- it's the GPU that is all the fuss. So lets just wait a WEEK and get our MINDS BLOWN.

Our minds will be blown by software and features, but not the GPU. Nintendo doesn't release specs anymore, not since the fanboys laughed at them with the GameCube reveal (which gave real performance numbers, not theoretical ones like the PS2 and Xbox). The only reason we got specs from the DS, 3DS and Wii was because ppl buy them at launch and then disassemble them. Wii U power won't be known most likely until after launch.

Okay, really? You either think that specs we can read is the same as seeing trailers with amazing graphics, believe that Nintendo won't show any trailers, or that Nintendo won't have amazing graphics.

What ever you believe, I stand firm that Nintendo will show amazing trailers that demonstrates next generation graphics.
