Okay so the idea came from reading comments from kotaku (who I really think have just sunk lower than IGN, they used to be great but people like crecente moved onto TheVerge, which IMO is the best tech blog site) and people really didn't get Windows 8.

So I read comments, very stupid comments,

You're actually...not[getting the same windows]. It changes some underlying functions of the operating system, which means distributors like Steam and some game developers like Blizzard have to change their existing systems to cope. Which makes no sense.

That statement can't be further away from the truth, people just don't understand that normal Windows is still there, Win32 is still going to be there for whenever the time comes for it to go away.

People just seem to be following what Gabe N said about Windows 8, when Windows 8 runs steam etc perfectly fine and if not better than 7. It's still windows. People may not like the metro stuff but it had to be done otherwise it would be too late for Windows to go properly cloud and mobile.

Whats people's conception of Windows 8, because I clearly know that a lot of people have no idea what its about.

PS Gabe, at least Windows is being iterating and changing to adapt to the new market, last time you guys did that was when you started doing episodic content to avoid a drought on your games, so where is half life 3/episode 3 it's been 5 years IIRC

I don't know. I dislike the metro start screen thing. A lot. I think it looks ugly. I get you still have your desktop and everything but it's just so... ick. Making me consider just making the permanent switch to Linux or dualbooting with Windows only there for select programs. Which I sorta do but I'm using 7 more currently atm for Sai.
Yeah, just because of the "aesthetics". Small issue yeah I know but I really like how customizable Linux is and I'd rather use it as a free alternative. If it was between 8 and Apple I'd stick with Windows...

Edit: I WAS gonna give the beta a chance just to have a better idea of "what's different" but they wanted you to do a full format and I couldn't run a VM for some reason. Oh well.

I use Vista. I don't like Windows 8 cuz' of the desktop. It's more suited for tablets. :)

The Metro stuff is honestly horrible. Perfect for tablets and smartphones, sure, but it doesn't feel like it's been designed for PCs at all. The fact that, as far as I'm aware, there's no way to switch back to a normal Windows interface makes it even worse. I don't see how it would have been so hard to design a different, more open layout for the PC version of the OS, rather than half-assedly forcing something intended to be used with a touchscreen on us.

I don't like this metro crap. I hate how Windows is going in a tablet and apple direction. The apps piss me off and desktops are meant to be desktops.
Windows started to look up when Windows 7 came out, now they failed even worse than Vista. And that's saying something, as I actually liked Vista.

I don't like the Metro UI. Even though they have a regular desktop and all based on Windows 7, which I love....I'm pissed that they took out the option to boot directly to desktop. Why should I have to go through metro first?

Am I the only person that actually likes the Metro [Microsoft does not use the word "Metro" anymore, due to copyright issues.] Windows 8 UI? It's fast, fluid and gets stuff done. Sure, it may not be exactly suited for desktops, but that's the reason why Microsoft incorporated mouse and keyboard controls.

I tried it for a while (but having to eventually get rid of it because it couldn't recognize my sound card/driver [It went straight from WinXP to Windows 8]) and it was really bad. It looks like it would work well with a tablet or any other touchscreen input for a desktop, but for keyboard/mouse only desktops, it just doesn't work well. I like the idea of a having a unified OS for all devices, but it's going well.
