I think mobile devices will cause handheld sales to decline, but I think there will still be a relatively large market for handhelds like the Vita and 3DS for the foreseeable future. Although games for handhelds are mainly higher quality than mobile games, £35-£40 is a lot to buy for one game, when there are some pretty good mobile games available for just a tenth of that price. The other disadvantage for handhelds is that you have to pay a lot of money for the device, when many people today already have smartphones which can run these games.

Eventually when mobile devices can handle full retail games(which they almost can) I believe that some people will figure there is no reason to continue purchasing games and handhelds when they can get games for much cheaper and some are almost just as good. I've already seen great games released on the handhelds (Dead Trigger, Nova games, COD: Zombies, even Sonic Racing) eventually Nintendo should consider bringing their games to iOS or even just a $5 dollar Mario side scroller. (Yes, I just said that. Get over it.) There is a much larger market on the iOS platform. They just dont want to lose their $40 bucks they're already making per game on their own handheld.

This is all just my opinion.

I don't see the handheld gaming console market going anywhere. They might decrease with the popularity of mobile gaming, but never die. An analog stick and a D-Pad make such a huge difference in games. Core gamers will continue to exist and you simply cannot get the full immersive experience with a cellphone in comparison to something like the 3DS. Will cellphones be able to handle more graphically adhanced games? I think so, but unless a cell device is made specially for gaming (ie Sony Xperia Play) and booms like the iPhone, I think handheld consoles will continue to do well.

Besides, emulating Pokemon on a touchscreen sucks so bad.
