I'm hoping the solution for this will be as easy as it was for the Wii. It comes as no surprise and I'm sure many were expecting. It's still a bummer, as there are titles I'm hoping get localized but don't see happening... Ahhhh well, maybe part of me is a bit disappointed.

We shouldn't have to. Nintendo has been one of the only major companies to region lock. And 360 doesn't count since it gets to Japanese games anyways Lol.

I'm a big importer and it gets expensive.

I really don't want to see a fix to this by Modding. The Wii is region locked and it gave modders incentive to hack it. I hope they have a tool like the GameCube did....I may start a petition...

I would of thought region locking helps piracy. Many consoles have been hacked on the basis that its justified as the console manufacturer is restricting which games an owner can use. So hackers hack the console so any game from any region can play. In that process it often ends up with the ability of the same console to run pirated games as the hackers have defeated the protection of the console. If the console was already multi-region hacking is less justified.

Clearly the DS range and wii have the ability to use pirated software quite easily.

I totally understand NIntendo's position but in the UK and to a greater extent Australia the prices of games are more expensive than other regions and the ability to buy from the USA or Canada to save money was an option. You can't help but feel resentful when you are charged a lot more for the same game even allowing for our higher rates of VAT.

Was anyone honestly expecting anything different? Especially after the 3DS was the very first Nintendo handheld to have a region lock.

It sucks though, yeah. Especially since in Europe we don't always get games that the US does, even if they're fully in English and therefore available for most of us to play. The situation is a lot better than it used to be, but there's still a few that just don't get EU releases or come out a year or so later, and this makes it a lot more difficult. -_-

Piracy was a huge issue in the DS days. They need to prevent it.

Region locks and piracy have no link what so ever.

The reason they region lock is to control marketing, and research.

A more newsworthy topic would be "Wii U is not region locked - CONFIRMED!"

Because we all saw this coming.

I already knew this beforehand. I've already set aside my tears, and right now, there is no wayNintendo will unlock there region-locks on the 3DS and Wii U. This is the only up side to Sony systems (other than the nice graphics and dual sticks, but that doesn't really matter, the un-region-lock does), this is coming from a HUGE Nintendo fan and a Sony fan (I like Sony in gaming and in general, but Nintendo will always dominate them, unless Nintendo screws up, like the region-lock)

Region lock has been a staple with Nintendo systems since, well, the beginning. This was to be expected. Nintendo still thinks this is a good idea.

Many people hacked their wii simply to run import games. There is a strong connection between piracy and region locking because often defeating region protection also allows pirate games as well as imported commercial games to be run.

Again I totally understand Nintendo's desire to region lock their console though. It gives them more control and provides greater profitability. If the wii u was struggling to sell in america and game prices were much lower there in order to create an incentive to buy the console they wouldn't want the japanese and europeans to benefit if the wii u console was selling in good numbers in those regions and they could still sell the games at a higher price.
