So the Nintendo Direct said the ID's would be exchanged like friend codes... does that mean there is a numbering system? Or do you enter it like a username?

It's a username, like XBL gamertags and PSN ID's.

I have sold my Wii U, so if I deleted you from NN before I sold it, or haven't accepted your friend request since, this is why.

Nintendo never said they were usernames, they said:
1. they'll be used like friend codes are currently
2. you need to register a mii for each account
3. 12 accounts per system
4. date of birth, password, gender, region, and email address are required.

Actually 3 is unclear.
They make a distinction between User Account's and User's under the System Account.

Yeah, baseless speculation happens here a lot.

look at this picture, it cant be more clear, you see the ID name near that girls avatar and in the bottom left of that window you se this " :) +" to add her as a friend, i think is just by touching there how you add a friend, but maybe you will need her confirmation too before you are officially friends, there has to be a confirmation feature because of the spammers and trolls and things like that, like in facebook would be nice

and then once you are officialy friends she will appear as "Kenichi" ( her NNID nick) in your friend list , that how i think it works, its also beign discussed on gaf but i think its a bit obvious.

another posible way to add someone as a friend might be by writing up his/her NNID nick and then wait for his/her confirmation, because maybe that screen is a friend petition from that girl to you and you have to decide to add her or not.

but the friends codes as they were: "5486904568" looks like they are totally gone! not 100% confirmed yet but pretty much

I only hope that the exchange of codes is dead, but the Wii U looks AWESOME. I can't wait.

How is three unclear?

The main change I see with NNIDs and friend codes besides the fact that it's user-created and alphanumerical is that NNIDs require an email address. Could this possibly mean that we can repurchase things if we get another Wii U and enter our existing information?

How is three unclear?

As I explained. They made a distinction between Accounts, meaning Nintendo Network ID Accounts, and Users, meaning Users Accounts on the system.
When you watch the Accounts video you will see what I mean.
