it depends on what you intend to use it for if your going to down load a lot of disc based games go with a large size if you are just going to use it for dlc and smaller e shop games 500gigs should be plenty. I got a 3tb one but I figured I can use it for other stuff if I need to.

Does it have to be USB 2.0 or 3.0, and what format does it need fat32 or NTFS

but i don't get the sd cards aren't a smart cheap option argument...
we have 64 gig sd cards here for $30
that's cheap to me for double the hard drive space your console has.

Considering you can get a 500GB external hard drive for about $70, or a 1TB external hard drive for about $90 or so, yeah, it is a bit expensive.

Plus, as others have said, the SD card would not go very far downloading full Wii U retail games in the long run. Just as an example, inFAMOUS 2 on the PS3 takes up 25 Gigs of hard drive space. So imagine what games on the Wii U will take up.

i guess im just a gamer and not a collector.. i would down load a game or 2 then beat it and delete it.
i have over 600 games on my xbox gamer tag there is no way i could afford to store all that on anything.
so for me it would be fine.. i have the rights and could always download it again if i felt like replaying a title....but i never really do.

Doesn't concern me, I'm using a hard drive.

From what I understand it works with both, but with 3.0 it only will work as if it were 2.0 with speeds and stuff at least that is what the guy at best buy told me. As for what format I have no clue, not really a techy guy but I pick mine up in a week so I'll find out soon enough

On the wii tho u can still plug it to the pc and read the whole sd card. So if games are on it you.can copy the.folder.

What aren't you getting here?
SD cards can be formatted the same way any usb drive could be.
By Nintendo, by me, by anyone.

And have a look at libntfs. ntfs is a closed filesystem, but it's been backward engineered just like wbfs, which is what the wii used.

Alternatively buy your wii u games at the retail store at discounted prices, play game until bored, sell wii u game to recoup a large preportion of its original price and use money towards next game effectively making games much, much cheaper than downloaded versions. Other small non retail wii u games just store on built in flash memory if you have a 32GB version.

I was just planning on using SD cards for DLC, not full retail games.

The Wii U has USB 2.0 connections. A USB 3.0 hard drive will work but it will be over kill unless you're also planning on using it with a computer with USB 3.0. As what format I don't think we know yet what the Wii U supports but whatever it is you should be able to format it through a computer so I wouldn't worry about that. Seagate is probably the best brand to get or otherwise something like Western Digital will suffice too. I've used both and I find Seagate to be more reliable.

So what is the point of SD cards then? Or is it just for full games?

I'm hoping that I can download DLC and Save data on my 64 GB sd card
