I don't see why it wouldn't although for the extra $10 you may want to consider the imo better made & quicker 3.0 usb WD

I'll probably get a 2TB HDD. That way I'll never run out! :D

To be honest Tron I haven't seen any info on what type of USB port is in the Wii U. you could be correct in saying 2.0 but by todays standard that's kinda been replaced by 3.0......but with Ninty you can never be sure.

They are USB 2.0 ports. It's been confirmed for a while now.

That sucks, I assume the usb 3.0 aren't compatible with the Wii U architecture.

IGN mis-quoted the neogaf fellow what mis-interpreted what Iwata was saying.

USB is completely backward compatible. And it's always a standard, so much so it's the start of the name - Universal.
Any USB 1, 2, or 3 hard drive will work, but only at the highest speed of the lowest version.

Wii U's port is USB 2.
A USB1 hdd would work at USB1 speeds.

A USB2 hdd would work at USB2 speeds.

A USB3 hdd would work at USB2 speeds.

What Iwata meant is don't expect USB3 speeds from a USB3 hard drive working on the Wii U's USB2 ports.
Also, sometimes hard drives pull more than the 5 volts a USB port can give out, hard drives which do that may not work.
Usually they're the Y-cable type. He could also have meant the larger 3.5 inch external hard drives still need to be plugged into the wall for power.

As for what to get, 500GB might be overkill imo, but there's absolutely no reason to buy any smaller. You wouldn't save much.
USB3 would be worth it, as when the Wii U's dead and burried you can get a lot more life from it than a USB2, and the saving again isn't too much.

Yeah I know USB 3.0 will work on USB 2.0 but at a significantly reduced speed,.......which sucks.

USB 2.0 should be just good enough to run games.

You're right , I can't disagree but the quicker load times would have been nice.....as someone who's sat in front of a PS3 waiting for the install will tell you :)

USB1 = 12 Mbit/s / 1.5 MB/s
USB2 = 480 Mbit/s / 60 MB/s
USB3 = 5 Gbit/s ( 5120 Mbit/s ) / 640 MB/s

Things usually go a lot slower than the marketing department say though.
It's a shame, but it's fine.
12x BD is 400 Mbit/s which is pretty much the norm for USB2 speeds, maybe a tiny bit slower.
PS3's BD disc reads at 2x, which is 72 Mbit/s

The speeds of which each USB version does. USB 3.0 is REALLY good.

It's a measurement of speed. The higher the faster.
A megabit is a million bits
A megabyte is a million bytes
A byte is 8 bits.

1Mb/s means it transfers 1 million bits from A to B each second.
1MB/s means it transfers 1 million bytes from A to B each second.

It used to be used to fool consumers, companies would leave the b and B ambiguous.
Nowadays they use Mo and Mb in hard drives, as Iwata explained.
The difference is the base they use.
KB being base 2 = 1KB = 1,024 Bytes
Ko being base 10 = 1Ko = 1,000 Bytes
Most companies gloss over the difference, Nintendo surprised me by actually explaining it as well as admitting to it.

2 TB is a waste... NSMBU is 1.8 gb nintendo land 3GB.. and also the disc are 25gb per layer i think 500GB or 1TB max is enough, unless you are planing to buy over 200 games and all of them in digital format is a waste, you dont will buy any discs ever? my advice, dont buy a 2TB HDD for the wii u lol

It is not. Games like Tekken take up to 16GB. My whole plan to get a 2TB HDD was to have so much space that I never run out. I HATE the feeling when my HDD get's close to full.
