You really, need one that's got its own power, rather than plugging into USB and having power that way, as it won't be as powerful.

I have sold my Wii U, so if I deleted you from NN before I sold it, or haven't accepted your friend request since, this is why.

iwata in the last ND as i mentioned in other thread said that if you are going to use a self-powered HDD ( with only a single usb plugged into the console ) you better use a Y usb cable to plug both usb into the console to have enough power supply for that HDD to ensure that it will work fine, because it seems that only 1 usb jack is not a good power source, but if you have that Y cable it should work fine dont worry about it.

To be quite honest I would or should I say plan on just getting a 500gb external hdd for now. I have a ps3 (old 60gb fat system) with a 500gb hdd in that and I download a lot of movies, demos, full games as well as apps and I still have room left on it. With the Wii U I can start with a half a terabyte then once that fills up or if it does the update they talk about in the direct will be in where I can use another hdd and interchange with the both increaseing the memory.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha that is soooooo funny, that's the exact same Hard Drive I'm getting, It's USB 2.0, it's small, compact and cheap, it's black just like the premium Wii U and it lights up blue when active just like the GamePad Home button does, that's why I chose that HDD.
