Yeah, there have been a few gay supporting characters in videogames, but never a (openly) gay main character in an AAA game.

Not unless their making a show out of it per se. Japanese people do accept gay people, they just do not like it highly displayed around so probably not.

Doesn't GTA have a game called Gay Tony or something like that? I can't say for sure what the game has in full as I never played GTA much past about 3. Anyway, it is bound to have happened or to happen in western culture. Specially with how crazy some of these games can get.

Yeah, the balad of gay tony was DLC for GTA IV, but you played as the assistant to gay tony

Sims and ME3 don't really count because that's user choices, not canon (another example: Dragon Age)

Most publishers shy away from that sort of thing - because no matter what you do - someone will be offended. Having side characters or a decision to choose your sexuality is different - but I don't think we will see a full fledged gay hero for quite a while. Most gamers aren't gay and publishers fear the backlash they would get.

I think it'd be pretty cool if we had more gay protagonists, and not just females who are overly sexualized and lesbian. But hey, that alone is a step forward in the gay acceptance area. :B

This is different, but I noticed in scribblenauts you can give a wife to a lonely female ghost who wants to have a wedding, and it works. They didn't have to do that, but it was nice.

I think that there will before openly gay characters in video games in the future, but I don't see the main hero of any game being openly gay anytime soon for two reasons. Firstly, the fact is that there are still a lot of homophobic people in the world, and the chances are that as a result of this, the sales of a game would suffer, particularly in certain areas which have strong views on homosexuality. Secondly, most people aren't gay, and I think a lot of straight people may find it harder to relate to an openly gay character, especially if sexuality was important in the game.

However, I think it will happen one day, and to be honest, although I'm straight, I wouldn't have any huge issues with playing as a gay character.

If they are gonna be gay, I would want it to be Luigi gay: not really gay but gay.

The Dragonborn in Skyrim can also marry same gender characters. There is really not much else, but if you sleep in the same bed, you wake up with a "lover's comfort" stat bonus.
