Shut the power off is different because it running a program to download the update. Kill the power and it starts back up but probably doesnt know what to do.
But losing internet would mean it would be unable to download untill the internet came back on.
But idk its just what i am thinking

If you lose internet during the downloading of the update, you can continue the update where you left off, no biggie. You can even turn off the power without the Wii U bricking during this phase.
If you lose internet during the installing of the update, it doesn't really matter because you already have the update downloaded. Do not turn off the power during this phase, or your Wii U WILL get bricked.

literally just took my wii back to walmart because of this - they had just gotten some in about an hour ago, and they thankfully saved one for me... gonna be very careful when i install the update tomorrow morning
Just to clarify markarro , did a power outage knacker your machine or losing internet connection?

The Wii U isn't bricked. Just let it sit there for a while, whilst it's downloading, and hopefully you should be able to use your Wii U in no time.

I have sold my Wii U, so if I deleted you from NN before I sold it, or haven't accepted your friend request since, this is why.

Oh God, losing power won't brick your Wii U - It puts it into Auto Pilot mode, so when you turn it on, it will continue downloading the update.

That's not strictly true. Yes if power is lost whilst downloading the patch or update the Wii U or any other similar device will not get bricked. However if the power is lost whilst its actually updating and installing then there is a good chance it will get bricked. That is why when ever you do such an update there is a warming to make sure the device is kept plugged in and powered. Even portable devices that have their own battery need to be kept connected to power.

For mine it was a power outage - the kids actually unplugged it from the wall to move to a different tv. It was plugged in for at least six hours afterwards, and nothing happened at all, so I took it back and got a replacement
To bad about the kids unpluggin it. Parents beware! Hope ur replacement is all good now So u left it plugged in for a further 6 hours and nothing?...Does that de-bunk the stories that its in auto pilot then , on the black screen? And it IS actually Bricked?
