Not even got into playing a game yet, busy setting things up etc, kids interferring and so on..
Anyway, if I want to stop what I'm doing It seems like I can only leave the gamepad with the screen on at all times. If I press the power button it doesn't do anything and holding it down proceed in shutting the wiiU down aswel.

Any tips? Can the wiiU stay on and the gamepad in standby?

Yes. It wakes up when you tap on the screen. It just turns the display off, so say you are playing Black Ops 2 and you want to save some battery, you can turn off the screen and continue playing.

It does.
On page 14 of the UK/Ireland manual.
Go into controller settings from the home menu.
It just turns off the screen.

Yeah, I read manuals...

Um... I have a question similar to this, and I didn't want to start a new thread, so... Is there any other way to turn the screen off besides going to the home menu and all that junk?

ya just press the home button on gamepad, controller setting and turn display off. its not long. but, it turn back on if any button is pressed...so ya cant play black ops like the other post above says...with the screen totally off, ya can just have like objective screen rather than showing the game on it..just press start and select together to toggle that
